King and Queen US tour LIVE: State visit to go ahead despite shooting | Royal | News

It would be “very reasonable” for the King to speak with Donald Trump about UK sovereignty of the Falkland Islands during his visit to the United States, the Shadow Home Secretary has said.

Reports have suggested the US could review its position on the South Atlantic territory in retaliation for Sir Keir Starmer’s lack of support for the war in Iran.

A potential shift in US policy has prompted Argentina to call for talks with the UK over the Falklands, although Downing Street insisted the islands’ sovereignty was “not in question”.

That came after an internal Pentagon email set out options for Mr Trump’s administration to punish Nato allies for refusing to join the US-Israeli strikes against Iran.

Argentina has long claimed sovereignty over the Falkland Islands and invaded in 1982 before being defeated in a short but bloody war with the UK.

Chris Philp told the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme: “The British Government should do everything possible to keep those islands British, including making sure there is enough military hardware on the islands to protect them.”
