Tom Cruise has had an interesting career path over the last decade, transforming himself into an action icon with the Mission: Impossible franchise, while also becoming something of a spokesperson for the theatrical experience. The revitalization of his career through practical stunts and blockbuster spectacle has been entertaining, yet one can’t help but remember the more dramatic roles that Cruise had taken on early in his career. In between blockbusters, he worked with directors like Paul Thomas Anderson, Stanley Kubrick, and more. Thankfully, the Top Gun actor is working on an ambitious new film with Alejandro Iñárritu, and buzz for the movie is starting to increase, especially thanks to one cast member of the movie hyping it up.
During an exclusive conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Sandra Hüller talked about her success this year with projects such as Rose and starring opposite Ryan Gosling in Project Hail Mary. Speaking about the actor’s range as a performer and the critical acclaim she’s earned in independent foreign movies and major blockbusters, the conversation soon switched to her next role in Digger. The film, which is written and directed by Iñárritu (known for The Revenant and Birdman, or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), is set for release in October, with plenty of marketing being done for its premium format release in IMAX.
Speculation surrounding the scope and ambition of the film has only increased by the footage released at Cinema-Con, and now Hüller has provided a small tease for the upcoming movie. While she couldn’t say much, she expressed her excitement, saying:
“I am nearly bursting with wanting to talk about this movie. I can’t. I legally can’t. I can say that I saw a version [of it] that’s maybe not the final version, and that it impresses me beyond anything I’ve ever seen. And that’s all I can say. I think it’s going to be a remarkable film.”
Digger seems to be a marriage of Tom Cruise’s past work and his current roles as an actor, bringing both the large-scale storytelling that the Mission: Impossible films have been known for and the creative sensibilities of a critically acclaimed filmmaker like Iñárritu. The director’s work has often been unconventional and visually stunning, exploring stories that have something profound or troubling to say about the human condition. His film before Digger, titled Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, featured a non-linear story and dream-like visuals, telling a deeply personal story.
The footage of Digger shown at Cinema-Con promised a different and eccentric performance from Tom Cruise, as the movie centers around “the most powerful man in the world” as he “races to prove [that he is] humanity’s savior before the disaster he unleashed destroys everything.” With an all-star cast that also includes John Goodman, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, and Michael Stuhlbarg, Digger‘s October release date can’t come soon enough.
