New “Must-See” 174-Minute Masterpiece Pulls Off a Box Office Feat Not Seen in 20 Years

Elizabeth Holmes’ story has captivated people for years now. The disgraced Theranos founder has jumped through hoops to prove her innocence, but those efforts never quite landed. Her fight to defend herself has left people wondering whether she’s a master manipulator or simply a pawn in her own delusion.

Amanda Seyfried portrayed Holmes in the Hulu series The Dropout, for which she took home three major awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series, a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Limited Series, and a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actress in a Limited Series. Beyond Seyfried’s portrayal, there have been numerous documentaries, television features, and a popular book about the rise and fall of Holmes. But nothing has ever come close to the real deal — until now.

Since Seyfried’s 2022 series aired, Holmes has faced significant legal and personal developments. She was sentenced to 11 years and 3 months in prison for wire fraud and conspiracy, though her sentence was later reduced. In March 2026, a federal judge reduced her sentence to 10 years and 3 months. She is scheduled to leave the minimum-security prison and will finish the remainder of her sentence at a halfway house in Austin, Texas, beginning Aug.23, 2027.

Infamously known for her deception and manipulation, Holmes has remained a subject of intense public fascination and scrutiny. When news broke that Holmes was expecting a child with her new husband, some members of the public questioned whether she truly understood the gravity of her actions. From the outside, it seemed as though she was simply carrying on with her life as normal. While few have had the opportunity to see what her day-to-day life actually looks like, Nathan Fielder has taken on a task like no other, living with Holmes and capturing her everyday life in a nearly three-hour, intimate documentary. Up until now, viewers have seen Holmes participate in carefully orchestrated interviews that give her time to prepare. Fielder’s documentary, You Can See Everything, offers a far more intimate look at her life.

Historically, documentaries rarely do well in theaters, if they are even granted a theatrical release. But thanks to the public’s enduring fascination with Holmes and her story, You Can See Everything is defying expectations at the box office. According to Variety, the documentary raked in an impressive $15 million from 855 theaters during its opening weekend, nearly doubling its projected earnings of $7 to $8 million.

The only other documentary to make similar headlines with its box-office debut is Melania. However, despite Melania’s $40 million budget, You Can See Everything is proving to be the more successful film. Remarkably, the documentary is even outperforming films starring well-known actors, including Daisy Edgar-Jones’ Sense and Sensibility and Jessica Chastain’s Other Mommy. The successful documentary is also making history on Letterboxd, becoming the highest-rated feature film of all time on the platform with a near-perfect score of 4.8 out of 5 stars. You Can See Everything is defying the odds and making history, but so has its main subject, for better or worse.
