The influence of Keanu Reeves’ dog-loving hitman John Wick has been undeniable. Since Baba Yaga first returned to the shady world of assassinations back in 2014, his shadow has draped over the genre as filmmakers everywhere try to find the same action success. Combining a variety of martial arts styles with slick, stylized “gun-fu,” the John Wick action revolution continues with a new
Netflix series, which takes the bold move of making a man as skilled as Mr. Wick a teacher. And he’s now providing a very valuable lesson.
The new limited series Teach You A Lesson is streaming on Netflix now, with the 10-episode action outing taking the typical genre beats and twisting them into something unique. Here, the villains are wreaking havoc on their victims, with a powerful team of elite individuals possessing a particular set of skills called in to put an end to their violently chaotic onslaught. It just so happens that, in this case, the villains are school bullies, the victims are students and teachers, and the crew called in to help are the Teachers’ Rights Protection Bureau.
“When respect collapses in schools, unconventional inspectors arrive to set things right — with sharp, no-nonsense lessons you won’t find in textbooks,” reads the synopsis (via Tudum), with the series introducing a government agency tasked with protecting the innocent and restoring order in troublemaking schools where students, teachers, or parents cross the line.
Directed by Hong Jong-chan (Juvenile Justice, Her Private Life) and written by Lee Nam-kyu (Daily Dose of Sunshine), the Bureau’s fearsome team is composed of Na Hwa-jin (Kim Moo-yul) and Choi Gang-seok (Lee Sung-min) — with both actors reuniting with director Hong after their work on the 100% rated drama Juvenile Justice — along with Im Han-rim (Jin Ki-joo) and Bong Geun-dae (Pyo Ji-hoon).
Using, let’s call them, “unconventional” tactics to get the school and its students back on track, Teach You a Lesson is based on the controversial, and ultimately banned webtoon Get Schooled. The Teachers’ Rights Protection Bureau fights back against insubordination and bullying like you wouldn’t believe, taking down entire classes of unruly students with the same zeal used by John Wick to eradicate hordes of assassins.
The series certainly looks like a unique way to deliver action-packed thrills, and while the source material faced backlash for its harmful, exaggerated stereotypes and offensive efforts to be as “edgy” as possible, hopefully the Netflix adaptation will rectify this as it hurls John Wick-style mayhem into a high school drama. Teach You a Lesson is now streaming.
