Joel Kinnaman Leads Explosive First Trailer for ‘Zero Dark Thirty’-Esque Thriller

Joel Kinnaman has had a prolific career in both film and television, though it is his work on streaming services that has helped him rise to prominence. Starring in only two films over the past two years, Kinnaman has kept busy with long-running original content on streaming platforms like Apple TV. From 2019 to 2026, the actor has starred in the Apple TV series For All Mankind, having a lead role in the first five seasons. Kinnaman also starred in the Netflix original series (and global streaming hit) Detective Hole, along with the Apple TV show Imperfect Women. Now, the first trailer has dropped for the actor’s next big project.

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming TNT limited series High Value Target: The Hunt for Saddam. The series is based on the memoir Debriefing the President, which was written by CIA Analyst John Nixon. This new look at the series also came with a premiere date: the first two episodes of High Value Target will be released on Sunday, September 13, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Interestingly, the third episode will premiere on the very next day, on Monday, September 14, also at 9 p.m. From that point on, subsequent episodes will drop on Sundays and Mondays.

The plot description for the series promises political intrigue based on real-life events, with Kinnaman playing a CIA Officer who unexpectedly becomes integral to U.S. history:

“High Value Target: The Hunt For Saddam is the story of John Nixon (Kinnaman), the first CIA officer to interrogate Saddam Hussein (Waleed Zuaiter, Baghdad Central) following his capture in December 2003. Set against the backdrop of one of the most consequential military operations in recent history, the pulse-pounding series explores the high-stakes exchanges between Nixon and Hussein. As Nixon seeks answers from the former Iraqi leader in his search for weapons of mass destruction, he is forced to confront the far-reaching consequences of the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the ramifications that would reverberate around the world for decades to come.”

Kinnaman is part of an ensemble cast that includes Waleed Zuaiter, Lena Góra, Rebecca Night, Tom Berenger, Paul Ryan, Christopher McDonald, Dar Salim, Matt Barr, Ewan Miller, and Talia Balsam. The eight-episode drama series appears to focus heavily on the questioning of Hussein. Waleed Zuaiter will play Hussein, acting opposite Kinnaman as a CIA officer intent on obtaining crucial information that helps change the course of history. It will be interesting to see how deep High Value Target will go in exploring the ramifications of the Middle East military invasion.

Jason Sarlanis, president of Turner Networks, provided a statement about the series and its draw as a thematically rich series, saying:

“TNT has always been home to bold, character-driven drama, and High Value Target: The Hunt For Saddam is exactly that. John Nixon found himself in a singular position at a pivotal moment in modern history – face-to-face with Saddam Hussein as the world sought answers about a war that would reshape the Middle East. More than two decades later, the consequences of that moment still reverberate through global geopolitics, and in Joel Kinnaman, we found the perfect actor to bring this extraordinary story to life.”

With a set premiere date of September 13, High Value Target is sure to be a popular series during the Fall television season.
