United Flight 1403 touched down safely at Harry Reid International Airport around 7 a.m. local time, roughly 40 minutes after departing Los Angeles International Airport.
The aircraft, a Boeing 757-200, had been en route to Newark Liberty International Airport when the crew flagged the mechanical issue.
The flight carried 176 passengers and seven crew members, all of whom deplaned in Las Vegas following the engine malfunction, an airline spokesperson said in a statement to media outlets. The airline said passengers were awaiting a replacement flight to complete their journey to Newark.
Neither the FAA nor United Airlines has disclosed the specific nature of the engine malfunction that prompted the diversion.
United passengers stranded in Las Vegas were being rebooked onto another flight to reach their original destination at Newark Liberty International Airport.
The FAA said its investigation into the engine issue is ongoing and directed inquiries about the incident to the airline directly.
United Airlines did not reply to a request for comment from NTD News by the time of publication.
Thursday’s diversion adds to a series of in-flight mechanical problems reported across the industry in recent weeks.
On Aug. 25, Republic Airways Flight 3670 was towed back to the gate at Chicago O’Hare International Airport after crew members reported a brake issue while the Embraer 175 sat on the taxiway, the FAA said in a statement. That flight was scheduled to continue to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, and the FAA said it would investigate that incident as well.
