A human-caused vegetation fire burning near the California-Nevada state line remained under evacuation orders Saturday after growing to about 1,274 acres, authorities said.
Firefighters worked overnight to prevent further spread. Helicopters continued dropping water until about 1 a.m., while retardant was placed around parts of the fire, including areas near the Hawk Fire burn scar.
Although firefighters had completed containment lines around the fire, Isernhagen said there was still substantial heat inside the burned area. Crews were conducting mop-up operations and directly attacking remaining hot spots.
Evacuation orders were still in effect for one structure within the fire perimeter, while several structures at the base of Eviden Mountain remained under a “ready” evacuation status. No reportable injuries had been recorded.
The county advised residents to evacuate immediately if their zone changed to red and directed people to emergencywashoe.com for evacuation updates.
The fire had been estimated at about 1,100 acres during an Oct. 2 briefing. At that time, officials said winds were driving the head of the fire toward the Hawk Fire burn scar, a development they expected could slow down the fire and help crews gain ground.
Officials’ initial objective was to keep the fire north of Verdi. The response then included eight fixed-wing planes, five helicopters, and more than 250 personnel, according to the agency.
The cause has since been determined to be human-caused and remains under investigation. The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District urged residents to take additional precautions to prevent wildfires.
