Debuting back in 2024, the first series of the spy action thriller Black Doves introduces Keira Knightley as the super spy Helen Webb. As well as being a spy, Helen is also the wife of the Secretary of State for Defence of the United Kingdom and soon finds herself in a tight spot after her identity as a spy is put under threat following the death of her lover and his involvement in the London underworld. Now facing danger from all sides, Helen’s employer, the “Black Doves,” send an old friend, Sam (James Bond’s Ben Whishaw), to protect her.
Thanks to a blend of intense bursts of John Wick-style gunplay, the intrigue and charm of a 007 adventure, and the complex interpersonal drama of the seminal John le Carré, Black Doves Season 1 was a huge hit for Netflix almost instantly. The series now stands at a “Certified Fresh” rating of 91% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, who praised Knightley’s lead performance, and the successful merging of genres to create a truly unique spy thriller.
At the time, MovieWeb called the series a “slick, addictive outing that Keira Knightley can sink her creative teeth into,” adding, “Sure, the series occasionally tends be a guilty if not pulpy pleasure, but as the action picks up in the latter episodes, and the espionage kaleidoscope swirls round and round, you really can’t take your eyes off it.”
‘Black Doves’ Season 2 Finds Helen Webb at the Heart of Power
Even before cementing all this success, and in a rare move for Netflix, Black Doves was renewed for a second season ahead of the Season 1 debut. While it’s required patience over the last two years, Netflix recently confirmed that Black Doves Season 2 will debut in November. The upcoming six-episode series promises to return with a bang, darling, and will once again center on Keira Knightley’s Helen Webb as she navigates life as the prime minister’s wife. Meanwhile, Sam faces a deadly ultimatum, and an attack on Black Doves boss, Mrs. Reed (played by Sarah Lancashire) pulls them both into a desperate hunt for answers.
Led once again by Knightley and Whishaw as Helen and Sam, alongside Lancashire as Mrs. Reed and Andrew Buchan as Helen’s husband, Wallace Webb, Black Doves recruits Ambika Mod (One Day), Babou Ceesay (Alien: Earth), Sam Riley (Firebrand), and Neve Campbell (Scream) for its second season. Black Doves Season 2 is due to be released on Netflix on Nov. 5, 2026.
