Aaron Taylor-Johnson Explains Why Everyone Should See ‘Kraven the Hunter’

Kraven the Hunter is set to hit theaters soon, and this latest Sony Spider-Man Universe project looks to be the most violent one yet. Set to the tune of Johnny Cash’s The Man Comes Around, the bloody red-band trailer for the film featured all sorts of animalistic action. In between all the bloodshed were hints at a larger family dynamic with the Kravinoffs, Kraven’s family, who will no doubt play an integral role in the story and origin of the character.

In an interview with Collider, Kraven the Hunter star Aaron Taylor-Johnson talked about how the inclusion of certain characters, like Kraven’s father, portrayed by Russell Crowe in the film, would give insight into the character’s origins and fill in the gaps that fans of the character may find interesting. Taylor-Johnson would even compare this development of Kraven and the tone of the movie to something along the lines of a gangster movie:

“Being able to kind of give you the missing pieces, this is kind of like the origin story. We’ve given you the bit of the Kravinoffs that, when you read the comic books, you see he’s full of these dark demons, especially

Kraven’s Last Hunt

; it’s like the end of his life. You kind of work from that backwards and go wow… I really want to get to the bottom of who he was before he became the villain. It was amazing to collaborate with J.C. Chandor, who really understands the character and the sensibility of telling a movie like this.
It’s really a gangster movie, which is cool.”

‘Kraven the Hunter’ Brings a Gangster Movie Vibe With Russell Crowe

Russell Crowe portrays Nikolai Kravinoff in the film, who is described as Sergei’s (Kraven) estranged father, a ruthless crime lord. While newer Spider-Man comics have gone on to show Kraven as a twisted member of his family by forcing his clone “sons” into deadly hunts, there has not been much development regarding Kraven’s own father.

By making Nikolai Kravinoff a gangster in the film, a new element is added to Kraven’s origin story that helps to possibly create exciting new character dynamics, especially since Crowe plays the character. In the same interview, Taylor-Johnson praised Crowe’s acting, stating, “He’s menacing, he’s demanding. The simplicity he brings is so powerful, and he’s everything that you want to see. It’s Russell Crowe giving the best performance in a long time, and it’s cool as hell.”

The film will reportedly do little to tie into the overall Sony Spider-Man Universe.

Kraven’s half-brother is also featured in the trailer, and eagle-eyed comics fans will no doubt pick up on the fact that he is another famous Spider-Man villain known as the Chameleon. When compared to the more simplistic origin stories in previous Sony Marvel films such as Venom, Madame Web, or Morbius, Kraven the Hunter clearly has an extra layer to it to distinguish itself from those other entries. Gangster movies often deal with the violent past of their characters coming back to haunt them, and given Kraven’s tenacity for violence, those themes could translate well to the upcoming Marvel movie.
