Adria Arjona Fights Off Super Soliders in First Trailer for New Action Thriller

A24 has had an interesting year so far with their theatrical slate, as the distributor has continued to diversify their releases with all sorts of genres and budgets. Most recently, Kane Parsons’ Backrooms has seen incredible financial success, and the studio still has plenty of more releases for the rest of the year. One such film is Onslaught, scheduled for release in the fall. Not much was known about the movie until the first trailer, which has just been released online. Starring Adria Arjona, the action horror movie promises plenty of explosive violence.

After posters for the movie released online yesterday, the full trailer has now been released, which can be viewed below. The movie has a simple premise, with the plot synopsis reading as follows: “When a rogue squad of genetically engineered super soldiers break loose in the desert, a badass Army sniper must unleash hell to protect her young daughter.” Onlaught’s first trailer sticks closely to this synopsis, showcasing the mother (Arjona) as she lives a quiet and secluded life before she has to use her skills from her army days to bring down enhanced killers who almost seem more machines than human.

Onslaught is directed by Adam Wingard, from a screenplay by Simon Barrett. This first trailer feels like Wingard is returning to his roots as a filmmaker, especially after working on massive titles like Godzilla vs Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Before those Kaiju blockbusters, Wingard had gained a cult following for his work directing the 2014 thriller The Guest, which Barrett also wrote the screenplay for. Interestingly, Onslaught’s initial premise has a lot of striking similarities to The Guest, as both movies have enhanced soldiers as part of the plot.

Dan Stevens, who stars as the main character in The Guest and had a supporting role in The New Empire, returns to work with Wingard in Onslaught, adding yet another thing the two projects have in common. The actor had previously described this upcoming movie as a spiritual sequel to his 2014 cult favorite, as Arjona’s character has to deal with faceless super soldiers who intrude on her home. Wingard has an eye for action on any scale, whether it is giant monster battles or intense gunfights. The more grounded action of Onslaught is sure to provide a different kind of intensity than what has been seen in the director’s previous work, especially since more than one super soldier is involved.

Onslaught is currently slated for release on Sept. 4, 2026, a month which already has plenty of high-profile releases like the DC Studios horror movie Clayface, and Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil. The combination of action and horror is sure to help make this release stand out, with Arjona taking on a physically demanding role, similar to the action and intensity that was required of her in the Disney+ series Andor. A24 also has plenty of other interesting releases, such as The Death of Robin Hood, The Invite, and the biopic Tony.
