Amazon’s ‘God of War’ Series Adds Ryan Hurst as Kratos

The God of War television series is ramping up its casting as hot on the heels of casting Ryan Hurst as lead character Kratos, the highly anticipated Amazon MGM Studios production has now added Max Parker as Season 1 villain Heimdall. The Watchman of Asgard and one of the sons of Odin, Heimdall is a god with the ability to anticipate things that are about to happen, and while feeling underappreciated and underestimated, he is always attempting to find a way to improve his position in the hierarchy. Parker is best known for appearing in the Netflix dramedy Boots, which ran for one season last year.

This news follows the official press release by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios announcing that Ryan Hurst has been cast as Kratos in God of War. Hurst is best known for playing Opie on the hit series Sons of Anarchy, as well as Beta on The Walking Dead. His film credits include Saving Private Ryan, Remember the Titans, and he will next appear in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. He also has a history with the God of War franchise, having previously voiced the role of Thor in 2022’s God of War: Ragnarok. Kratos was originally voiced by Terrence C. Carson in the original God of War games and has been voiced by Christopher Judge since 2018.

Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, Fallout, The Boys) has signed on to direct the first two episodes of God of War, with Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) serving as showrunner, executive producer, and writer.

The press release reveals that God of War “follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.” The series draws heavily on the 2018 God of War game, which relaunched the franchise that originally began in 2005. Kratos’ character description reads:

“The titular character of the entire franchise, Kratos is Spartan by birth, and a god by nature. Raised in a martial culture, he rose to command armies in service of his homeland until one day he made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War and lost his soul in exchange for being victorious in battle. Over the course of ten wildly successful games, Kratos vanquished mortals, creatures and gods alike. In the process, he became an iconic character in pop culture, known for his stoic nature, unchallenged combat skills, and tragic past. In God of War, the live action series, his story will closely follow the path of the last two games as he deals with something new: his ten year old son Atreus. This father and son dynamic began a whole new chapter in the legendary series and will be the heartbeat of the new show.”

God of War was originally planned to be a feature film, but in 2022, PlayStation Studios shifted the project to a television series. Ronald D. Moore joined the series in October 2024 after the original showrunners, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (The Expanse) and Rafe Judkins (Wheel of Time), had stepped down due to creative disagreements with Prime Video. Casting for God of War is currently underway, but no production start date is known. The series has already been given a two-season order and will air on Prime Video.
