Dave Bautista’s New Action Thriller Was Always Planned as a Franchise [Exclusive]

Dave Bautista is delivering the action once again in his new movie, Trap House, which opens in theaters on November 14. The MCU (and potentially future DCU) star leads a strong cast, including Bobby Cannavale, Kate del Castillo, and Tony Dalton. But it’s the film’s younger cast who steal the show and, according to Dave Bautista, it was always meant to be that way. In fact, the casting for the teenage characters was so great, it could launch a brand-new action franchise.

During an exclusive interview with MovieWeb’s Joe Deckelmeier, Dave Bautista discussed his work on Trap House and the scene-stealing young cast of the new action movie. When asked what impressed the veteran wrestler and actor about the film’s younger cast (which includes Jack Champion, Sophia Lillis, and Blu del Barrio), the actor first said, “Nothing.” But, he wasn’t playing the heel. Instead, Bautista knew exactly how impressive the actors were before filming began. “Let me preface that by saying it’s because this was a very thoughtful casting process, when we were very particular about casting this film.” But the choice in casting goes beyond their acting talents, as Trap House could be the start of a new blockbuster action franchise. Bautista continued:

“And the reason was that I set this film up to be a franchise. And I knew, moving forward, it would be all about the kids. This was always developed to be that. And the first film we would have to establish, you know, the kids and the relationships, but I was always one of the parents to be the backdrop, because I wanted this to be about the kids and move forward with the kids.”

His faith in the film’s younger actors turning into stars of their own and building Trap House into a franchise has already begun to pay off. “And you’re already starting to see it. Like Whitney’s blowing up,” Dave Bautista continued. “She’s blowing up. And this is before Trap us, but we saw it then, and we just invested in like, ‘The kids are gonna be huge.’ Jack, we know it’s gonna be huge.”

What Is ‘Trap House’ About?

Directed by Michael Dowse and written by Gary Scott Thompson and Tom O’Connor, the film stars Bautista as a DEA agent tasked with bringing down a major drug cartel. But, when one of his squad mates is killed on duty, and their bereaved family is left with almost no payout, his rebellious teenage son (Jack Champion) gathers his own team to steal money directly cartel. It’s a bombastic, action-packed thriller that combines the explosive-filled action sequences and shootouts that every action fan loves, with a genuinely emotional story. The official synopsis reads:

“In El Paso, Texas, an undercover DEA agent and his partner embark on a game of cat and mouse with an audacious group of thieves: their own rebellious teenagers.”

At the time of writing, there is no news on whether Trap House will receive a sequel. But, providing the film is a success once it is released in theaters on November 14, expect an update on Trap House 2 to be right around the corner.
