Federal Agents Assaulted by Crowd During California Arrest Operation

A violent crowd attacked Homeland Security Investigators (HSI) and other federal law enforcement personnel in Southern California on Wednesday when they sought to arrest two suspects accused of assaulting federal officers in an earlier incident, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said.
The alleged attack occurred when authorities sought to execute arrest warrants for siblings Isai Carrillo and Virginia Reyes, who are both American citizens in Oxnard, over a July incident at a marijuana facility, the DHS said in a statement released Friday.

“As HSI was executing this arrest warrant, Reyes posted about ICE’s whereabouts on social media, drawing a violent mob that attacked federal law enforcement,” the statement said.

Federal officers were pelted with projectiles as they worked to arrest the pair, with the chaos leading to Jesus Posadas-Espinoza, a U.S. citizen, also being arrested after allegedly throwing rocks at federal officers. He now faces assault charges against a federal officer and has been transferred to the custody of the United States Marshal Service.

Carrillo was arrested on Wednesday. Reyes initially fled from law enforcement, but turned herself in on the following day.

Four additional individuals with Mexican citizenship were arrested at the scene on Wednesday: Lorenzo Toribo-Lopez, Talio Toribo-Lopez, Sergio Ortiz-Tenorio, and Victoria Ortiz-Tenorio. Each has a history of illegal entry and driving under the influence, resulting in bodily injury. All four have been handed over to the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation.

The arrests followed an incident on July 10, when federal agents arrived at a marijuana farm in Camarillo, where Carrillo and Reyes allegedly orchestrated a violent response, hurling rocks at law enforcement vehicles and officers while mobilizing others to join in the assault.

“Violent rioter Isai Carrillo, arrested by HSI, was part of a violent group called VC Defensa—a network that regularly impedes and obstructs law enforcement,” according to Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “The operation, which these violent rioters tried to obstruct, resulted in law enforcement rescuing 10 migrant children from potential exploitation, forced labor, and human trafficking.”

The attack on officers comes amid a large surge in assaults and death threats against federal authorities as the Trump administration cracks down on illegal immigration and related criminal activity.

“Law enforcement officers are facing a 1,000% surge in assaults against them and an 8,000% increase in death threats against them,” McLaughlin said. “They are putting their lives on the line to arrest murderers, rapists, and gang members.”

Since June 6, ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection have arrested more than 7,100 individuals without legal status across the Los Angeles region.

DHS warned in its announcement that rioters will face the full force of the law when interfering with enforcement or attacking officers.

“Secretary Noem’s message to the rioters is clear: you will not stop us or slow us down. ICE and our federal law enforcement partners will continue to enforce the law,” DHS said. “And if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
