Final “Superfan” Episodes of ‘The Office’ Get Peacock Release Date

The US version of The Office was a staple of streaming service Netflix for years, arguably being one of the main reasons fans subscribed to the service. On Jan. 1, 2021, the beloved sitcom left Netflix to become a key component of NBCUniversal’s all-new streaming platform Peacock, leaving many fans disappointed about having to sign up for a new streamer. However, a key part of this pivot was that, in addition to offering audiences the beloved episodes of The Office they have watched so many times that they memorized, Peacock also started rolling out “Superfan” versions of select episodes, which were longer and had bonus scenes. And now, finally, more than a decade after The Office concluded, Season 9 will be getting “Superfan” episodes on Peacock.

The “Superfan” version of The Office‘s Season 9 will hit Peacock on Jan. 26. With all previous eight seasons already releasing their “Superfan” episodes on Peacock, this means that the complete series has finished unveiling these extended episodes. As Thanos might say, “The work is done.”

The cult of The Office undeniably grew larger than ever thanks to the series being made available on Netflix and then Peacock, but for those fans invested in physical media, you were often given deleted or extended scenes of beloved episodes. These “Superfan” versions aren’t entirely new episodes, rather they are re-edited to incorporate those scenes, making each episode as much as 10 minutes longer.

The Expanding World of ‘The Office’

The American Office has dominated the TV landscape so strongly that many fans don’t even realize it needs to be specified as the “American” Office. The series is based on the UK The Office, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, which earned two six-episode seasons and two hour-long specials, running from 2001 to 2003. Gervais would have a cameo in the American The Office which his character, David Brent, bumped into Steve Carell’s Michael Scott.

The American Office launched in 2005 as a six-episode season, with the first episode being an almost shot-for-shot remake of the original The Office series premiere. This American version would go on to run from 2005 to 2013, earning nine seasons in total, spanning 201 episodes. America isn’t alone in trying to replicate the magic, as Canada, Australia, Brazil, Sweden, Poland, Germany, Mexico, and more countries all put their own spin on the concept.

“Superfan” episodes aren’t the only thing The Office fans subscribe to Peacock for, as last fall saw the debut of the spin-off series The Paper. Created by Greg Daniels, who developed the US version, alongside Michael Koman, The Paper is technically a spin-off from the original narrative, though serves somewhat as a sequel, in that Oscar Nunez returned as Oscar Martinez. Outside of this connection, however, The Paper is more of a spiritual successor than an outright sequel.
