‘Heart Eyes’ Lands Promising Rotten Tomatoes Score for New Horror Slasher

Singles rejoice, for one director is giving you a concrete reason to be thankful you’re not smitten this Valentine’s Day. Werewolves Within director Josh Ruben has crafted a love-themed scare for couples and singles alike this February, and it’s finally in audiences’ hands. Heart Eyes, a new Valentine’s Day slasher from Sony, might just scare you single. The latest addition to the masked killer film family is sitting at a comfortable 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is quite impressive for a holiday-themed horror film.

Heart Eyes, starring heartthrobs Mason Gooding and Olivia Holt as a brave couple daring to fight back against a killer with glowing hearts for eyes, was released to the public today, February 7. From the comedic mind of the director of Werewolves Within (one of cinema’s funniest horror films), the new slasher movie is now playing nationwide and reviews are piling in.

A former member of digital sketch group CollegeHumor, Ruben is no stranger to comedy. It seems like the director has been honing his unique humor for odd projects like Werewolves Within and Heart Eyes, carving out his own niche in the film industry. The official synopsis for the Valentine’s Day flick reads: “A masked maniac with glowing, red eyes returns every Valentine’s Day to terrorize unsuspecting couples.” Check out the trailer for the lovey-dovey horror comedy below.

Josh Ruben Is Giving the People The Violence They Want This Valentine’s Day

Part of a stellar February horror lineup, Ruben’s latest horror comedy is making quite an impression on horror fans, who are taking to Letterboxd to share their opinions on the new slasher. Most reviewers were stunned by the talent behind the film and its ability to give a much-needed catharsis to viewers that get sick to their stomachs watching rom-coms.

“Just found out the director use to star in a bunch of college humor sketches I grew up watching. Now I see why I found this movie HILARIOUS. Great holiday themed slasher.” – Cris Parker

“do you ever see those cheesy romance movies and think “ugh i wish someone would chop these guys’ heads off” well i have a movie for you !!!

😍 is campppppp” – rachmell

Another reviewer praised the film for being able to actually pull off an unlikely genre mashup of horror and romantic comedy, while doing justice to both:

“I’ve never seen a TRUE mashup of the rom com and slasher genres before!!!

Props to the filmmakers for committing to making it actually BOTH. 😍” – Hailley

It’s clear that Heart Eyes is winning over audiences’ hearts and respect as it dares to go where no film has quite gone before. Possibly creating a resurgence in an overlooked genre, Ruben has proved once again that he knows his horror and comedy, and even better knows how to create an endearing combination of the two. Now he’s added romance to the mix and it seems like audiences are loving it. Who knows what wacky genre crossover the emerging director will tackle next?
