HMRC alert to millions of workers – ‘apply now’ before deadline | Personal Finance | Finance

HMRC is contacting Self Assessment taxpayers to remind them that tax bills can be paid through monthly installments. With the Self Assessment deadline looming, taxpayers may be concerned about paying their upcoming bills, especially with the financial pressures of Christmas.

HMRC has reminded people of the Time to Pay service which allows customers to spread liabilities through monthly installments. Since April 6, 2025, around 18,000 payment plans have been set up. For those looking to file returns, the deadline is January 31, 2026.

By organising your finances now, you can avoid any last-minute stresses when it comes closer to the deadline.

If you have bills of up to £30,000, you can set up a payment plan online.

HMRC says the Time to Pay system allows people to work around their circumstances and time payments in a way which works for them.

If you’re looking to get this set up, you should remember you must file your Self Assessment return before you can set up the Time to Pay arrangement.

HMRC Chief Customer Officer Myrtle Lloyd said: “We’re here to help customers get their tax right. If you are worried about paying your Self Assessment bill, assistance is available.

“Our online payment plans offer financial flexibility and can be tailored to individual circumstances.

“We want to support all our customers in meeting their tax obligations with confidence.”

Self Assessment is a system HMRC uses to collect Income Tax which is usually deducted automatically from wages and pensions.

People and businesses with other income must report it in a Self Assessment tax return.

If you need to send a Self Assessment tax return, fill it in after the end of the tax year (April 5) it applies to.
