Indonesia ’s Tourism Boom: More than Hundred Events Added of this Year for the Karisma Event Nusantara Agenda

Tourism industry of Indonesia is set to experience large-scale growth in 2025, with 110 big events lined up to be included in the Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) calendar. The program, led by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, aims to spur regional economies, promote the rich cultural and natural offerings of the country, and support the local tourism sector.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ni Luh Puspa, highlighted that the 110 events will take place across various regions of the archipelago, focusing on showcasing Indonesia’s diversity in tourism and local heritage. Puspa emphasized that these events will be critical in fostering economic growth, supporting small businesses, and preserving cultural traditions through tourism.

Success of KEN in 2025: Record Numbers in Visitor Engagement and Economic Impact

In the first half of 2025, a total of 46 KEN events were successfully hosted across 25 provinces in Indonesia. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Tourism, 42 events out of these were evaluated for their economic and social impact. These events attracted over 5.07 million visitors, generated an estimated Rp463.07 billion (approximately $27 million) in economic transactions, and created employment opportunities for more than 60,000 workers.

In addition, these events supported over 6,000 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and involved 68,000 artists, further illustrating the positive ripple effect tourism has on local economies and employment.

“The 2025 KEN is set to be a driving force for the activation of tourism and economic growth, and we expect a strong finish to the year with 58 events still to take place,” Puspa added. These events will contribute to tourism activation, strengthening Indonesia’s appeal both locally and internationally.

Toba Caldera Geopark: Striving for UNESCO Green Card Status

In addition to the events, Toba Caldera Geopark in North Sumatra remains a focal point of Indonesia’s tourism development. Puspa shared her optimism about the revalidation process for the Green Card status of Toba Caldera Geopark, with an assessment taking place from July 21-25, 2025. The results of this evaluation will be presented to the UNESCO Global Geopark Assembly in Chile on September 5-6, 2025, with a final decision expected in Paris in 2026.

The government’s ongoing efforts include cross-ministerial collaboration, with departments such as Energy and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Transportation assisting in the development of interpretive maps and flight announcements to boost visibility. Regional authorities and other stakeholders are also working closely to ensure the revalidation is successful.

Puspa highlighted the importance of maintaining the Green Card status once it is regained, underlining the role of sustainable practices in preserving the country’s natural tourism assets.

The government’s commitment to preserving and developing natural tourism attractions is central to Indonesia’s Vision 2045.
