Macon Blair’s New Comedy Now Titled ‘Idiots’ Gets Summer Release Date

Macon Blair has had an impressive few years in front of and behind the camera, with major acting credits in projects like Reservoir Dogs and Oppenheimer to his name. He has also been busy on the production side, writing the screenplay for films like The Toxic Avenger and Brothers, which have become major hits in theaters and on streaming platforms. Now, Blair has a brand-new comedy in the works that he both wrote and directed, which should put his name back into the ether as comedies hope to make an impact on the greater 2026 release slate.

Originally titled The Shitheads, this new comedy made its debut at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, telling the story of two people who have hit rock bottom in their lives. From there, they have to work together to move a rich and troubled teen to rehab for a shady transport service, setting up plenty of wild hijinks from start to finish. Now, as the movie gets set to make its debut later this year, some changes have been announced for its arrival.

Reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Independent Film Company announced that Macon Blair’s upcoming movie, The Shitheads, has officially been retitled to Idiots. The report also indicated that the movie would be released in theaters on Aug. 28, 2026. Blair explained that the original title was something that he “got attached to” and was “unable to move away from it,” waiting for someone to come up to them and say that they could not use that title.

O Shea Jackson Jr Dave Franco Mason Thames The Shitheads Slate Entertainment Group

Blair’s Idiots movie will feature an impressive cast of modern comedy greats, led by Dave Franco (Neighbors) and O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton). The rest of the cast includes stars like Kiernan Shipka (Mad Men), Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon), Nicholas Braun (Succession), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), and Killer Mike (Billions).

This new outing also has a horde of big names on the producing side, including Danny McBride and David Gordon Green, as Blair and Franco both work on that side of the camera as well. While story details are still being kept under wraps for the next few months, reviews have teased the idea of salvation and redemption playing a major role in the plot. Putting a drug addict (Dave Franco’s Mark) next to somebody in Jackson Jr.’s Davis who continually strives to do better, this movie should bring plenty of laughs from start to finish, plus an interesting look into real experiences people see in the world every day.

Idiots will now debut in theaters on Aug. 28, 2026.
