Following her recent appearances in blockbusters such as Barbie and Wuthering Heights, there’s little doubt that Margot Robbie is one of the biggest stars on the planet. Widely considered the movie that put Robbie on the Hollywood map, The Wolf of Wall Street is an epic 2013 dark comedy crime thriller based on Jordan Belfort’s 2007 memoir of the same name. Directed by Martin Scorsese, the film tells the true story of Belfort’s rise to one of the most notorious stockbrokers on Wall Street, and the subsequent downfall of his company, Stratton Oakmont.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Belfort, Robbie plays Naomi Lapaglia, a fictionalized version of his second wife, Nadine Caridi. Also along for the ride are such Hollywood heavyweights as Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Jon Bernthal, Kyle Chandler, the late Rob Reiner, and Jon Favreau, to name a few.
Set in the ’80s and ’90s, The Wolf of Wall Street is a wild, R-rated flick about greed, excess, power, and addiction. It’s a stylish, fast-paced film that, in the hands of any other director, might have fallen apart, but with Scorsese behind the camera, it all flows beautifully together to create a memorable movie. Not only did he nab a Best Director nod for his work at the 86th Academy Awards, but The Wolf of Wall Street was also nominated for Best Picture (it lost to 12 Years a Slave), and DiCaprio for Best Actor.
Even today, 13 years after its release, The Wolf of Wall Street is still held in high regard among critics and viewers. It holds a Certified Fresh rating of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, and an audience score of 83%. Over on IMdb, the film is rated 8.2 out of 10, with people calling it everything from “DiCaprio’s best performance of all time,” to a movie that’s “chaos, confidence, and consequence all at once.”
‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ Soars on Streaming
Earning $400 million at the box office against a budget of $100 million when it was released more than a decade ago, The Wolf of Wall Street is currently experiencing a massive surge on streaming in the United States after it was added to Hulu on July 1. As of this writing, the film is at #8 on the platform’s list of Top 15 movies (per Flix Patrol), sandwiched in between the recent Sam Raimi hit, Send Help, and the Sam Rockwell sci-fi comedy, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.
Next up for Robbie is the aforementioned Ocean’s prequel, which will explore the origins of the Ocean’s family criminal legacy. Announced earlier this year during CinemaCon, Robbie appeared on-screen during the Warner Bros. presentation to reveal a little of what we can expect from the new movie:
“Before Danny Ocean ever stepped foot in Vegas, two masterminds taught him everything he knows: his parents. You’ll see them in all their prime in our new movie, pulling off an epic heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.”
