Penticton, British Columbia, is set to host the prestigious 21st Adventure Racing World Championship, an event where 25 nations will converge to compete in one of the most challenging and physically demanding athletic competitions on the planet. This exciting race will showcase the resilience, strategy, and endurance of elite athletes as they navigate through rugged terrain, unpredictable weather, and extreme conditions. Adventure racing, which blends disciplines such as trail running, mountain biking, kayaking, and orienteering, is a true test of both mental and physical toughness. By selecting Penticton as the host city, this year’s competition promises to be an unforgettable spectacle, combining the area’s breathtaking landscapes with the intensity of world-class athleticism. With participants from across the globe, the championship will not only push the boundaries of human performance but also bring together diverse cultures united by their passion for adventure and sport.
The 21st edition of the Adventure Racing World Championship kicks off in Penticton, British Columbia, on September 25th, with teams from 25 nations now heading to Canada to gear up for one of the most grueling athletic competitions on the planet.
Hosted by Expedition Canada, the Subaru Canada Adventure Racing World Championship is being managed by Hoodoo Adventures, a company renowned for its expertise in outdoor events. This prestigious Championship marks the grand finale of the Adventure Racing World Series, a global circuit that features over 80 races annually. Every year, a different expedition race is selected to serve as the host for this ultimate event.
ARWS CEO Heidi Muller will travel from Australia to be at the World Championship and commented;
“It’s an ambition of all expedition races around the world to host a World Championship and only one event per year gets the privilege to host the best adventure racers in the world and to show off the natural wonders and culture of their region to a global audience.
“Organising a World Championship is a test of endurance in its own right, and the Expedition Canada team, lead by Lyndie Seddon, has been working hard on their preparations and the course for over a year. Now it’s their time!
“Scouting and preparing a course of over 750km through wilderness terrain is an immense task, as is hosting teams from 25 nations and broadcasting a global event. Hoodoo Adventures has done an exceptional job preparing this World Championship and, with the backing of Subaru Canada, they are ready to deliver an incredible competition which will enthral a global audience. It’s time for Expedition Canada to shine on this world stage.”
The course spans more than 750 kilometers across the stunning Okanagan region and the Rocky Mountains, where teams will navigate on foot, mountain bikes, and by paddling canoes and packrafts. Over the course of up to 10 days, participants will race non-stop, relying on maps and compasses to chart their own paths through rugged mountains and untamed wilderness. Their goal is to locate 50 checkpoints, all while being fully self-sufficient and unsupported. GPS devices are not allowed.
Each team consists of four members, with a mix of genders, and they must travel and finish as a group; if one member falls behind or drops out, the entire team is disqualified. The Adventure Racing World Championship is the ultimate test of teamwork, where success is determined not only by speed but also by intelligence and collaboration. Teams will face setbacks, exhaustion, and moments of doubt, but the champions will be the ones who overcome challenges and work cohesively toward the finish line.
The event will feature some of the world’s top teams. The reigning champions, France’s 400team, who took home the title in Ecuador last year, return to defend their crown. The Swedish Armed Forces Adventure Team, victors in both 2023 and 2021, are aiming for a third win, and the #1 ranked team, Vidaraid of Spain, is also competing. All five of the world’s top-ranked teams will be in the race.
Throughout the year, the AR World Series holds Qualifying events, with the winners earning a spot at the World Championship. This year’s race will feature the winners of 9 expedition races and champions from regional events on every continent. In total, 56 teams from 25 countries will compete.
The teams will be greeted in Penticton and the Okanagan region with an opening ceremony and flag parade on September 22, led by Hereditary Chief Adam Eneas. Expedition Canada has collaborated with local artists, singers, and dancers to offer the participants a unique cultural experience in addition to the sporting challenge in British Columbia.
Race Director Lyndie Seddon said, “Adventure Racing is not like any other sport. We are covering a 750km course and there is a ripple effect on communities we pass through, and on the racers, as it will change their perspective of what they can accomplish. This isn’t just a race, it’s an opportunity to show who we are.”
She added, “The course will pass through some first nation territories where very few people get to travel and we are grateful to all of the communities who have welcomed us. Adventure racers are by nature explorers and we’ll take them on a unique journey into the heart of the Canadian wilderness where they will experience the land, meet the people who live there, and discover more about themselves.”
The event serves as a global gathering for the adventure racing community, featuring 17 Race Directors from the Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS) across 10 countries. ARWS referees from Canada, the UK, and Croatia will be overseeing the competition. The race also includes 18 members of the Adventure Racing Hall of Fame, with more members set to be inducted during the closing ceremony. Following the race, the International Adventure Racing Conference will be held, featuring speakers and participants who will join virtually from around the world, with the conference broadcast live on the ARWS YouTube channel.
