Over the last decade, Taylor Sheridan has proven to be a force to be reckoned with in the TV space. Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River all proved his big-screen talents, but Tulsa King, Landman, and the sprawling world of Yellowstone have all become some of the most talked-about TV series currently available to audiences. Even though the Yellowstone franchise continues to expand with spin-offs and sequels, not all of Sheridan’s offerings feature brooding figures on horseback, such as his four-part crime thriller on Paramount+.
Launching in 2021 as a Paramount+ exclusive, Jeremy Renner stars as Michael “Mike” McLusky, someone who aims to prevent the small town of Kingstown, Michigan, from blowing like a powder keg, attempting to serve as a mediator between the town’s strongest forces of drug dealers, criminals, and the police department. Even though Season 4 of Mayor of Kingstown only just wrapped up this past January, Renner and the rest of the creative team are back at it, as Paramount+ today confirmed that production on the fifth and final season was underway.
The following photo was shared to announce the start of production:
Paramount also offered up details of what Season 5 will explore:
This season, in the wake of Tracy’s murder and the vengeance visited upon Callahan by Mike (Renner) and Kyle (Taylor Handley), FBI agent Russell Hardy (David Morse) arrives in Kingstown searching for the “fugitive” Callahan. A true lawman, Agent Hardy threatens to unearth all of Mike’s sins and secrets, and disrupt Kingstown’s tenuous balance of power.
Also starring in Season 5 are Edie Falco, Laura Benanti, Hugh Dillon, Taylor Handley, Tobi Bamtefa, Derek Webster, Necar Zadegan, Nichole Galicia, and Lennie James.
Even though fans will be sad to say goodbye to the series, having earned praise throughout its run will help ensure that the project goes out on a high note instead of overstaying its welcome. In fact, the series itself arguably gets better with each season, which could mean the upcoming Season 5 will be even better than everything that came before it. Unfortunately, this final season will only consist of eight episodes as opposed to the 10-episode seasons we’ve come to expect.
Given the passionate fan base surrounding Mayor of Kingstown, viewers have had a lot of questions about why the show is now coming to an end. A number of theories have emerged, all of which sound valid and are devoid of controversial stances.
One reason is that last year, Sheridan signed a new deal with NBC, despite the number of hits he’s brought to Paramount. Whether he was encouraged to end the series by Paramount because of this or if he just wants to focus his efforts on his NBC deal, tying up some of his loose threads makes sense for the filmmaker. Similarly, while Mayor of Kingstown is an undeniable success for the streamer, it hasn’t permeated all of pop culture quite the way some of his other series have, with him possibly wanting to give more attention to the titles that have a larger hold on viewers.
The series coming to an end could also have nothing to do with Sheridan himself, and the busy schedules of the high-profile cast are causing complications, as are their salaries. If Jeremy Renner were to exit the series, it’s difficult to imagine the show existing in its current form without him. Still, this is Taylor Sheridan we’re talking about here, so even if the proper series is coming to an end, we can’t rule out spin-offs or prequels to Mayor of Kingstown.
