Russia killed at least 15 people in Ukraine in an attack on a residential building. On Saturday morning, Russia targeted the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia with five glide bombs, killing at least 15 people, including three children, President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (DSNS) have said. At least 16 other people were injured in the attack, with more still missing and believed to be under the rubble after the strike.
“Medical staff are doing everything they can to help everyone,” Ivan Fedorov, the regional governor, wrote in a post on Telegram. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.
Overnight, Russia targeted 13 Ukrainian regions, Zelensky said, adding that Ukraine would respond to the attacks.
The deadly strikes come just one day after the US President Donald Trump lifted a ban on diesel supply from Russia in a widely condemned deal with the dictator Vladimir Putin. The US president announced Friday that Russia has committed to supplying nearly five million tons of diesel fuel to the US, as the conflict with Iran drives up global fuel prices.
Zelensky has heavily criticised Trump’s deal with Russia, calling it a gift to Putin that amounts to “an investment in a war that must be ended, not prolonged”.
In his response to the overnight strikes, he said on X: “Today, Russia thanked us for lifting the sanctions on diesel exports by dropping five glide bombs on residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia.”
He added: “Russia interprets any easing of pressure as a signal that it can supposedly continue the war.
“Russia must understand that the war needs to be stopped, and for that, it must feel its losses.”
The latest strikes on the city come amid a sharp increase in the number of Russian attacks that are causing higher numbers of civilian casualties.
On Thursday, at least 33 people were killed in another Russian glide bomb attack on two civilian buses in Kramatorsk, in the eastern Donetsk region.
