South Africa topped the 2026 world adventure travel rankings, beating off competition from the United States and other countries to take the top spot. The United States came second with Argentina finishing third according to the Global Rescue Autumn 2026 Traveller Sentiment and Safety Survey. Those with experience travelling internationally are keen to visit destinations which offer wildlife, mountainous regions and outdoor activity. The research was carried out from 6-10 October 2026 and found that whilst Nepal was the most popular destination amongst those who didn’t live in the United States, women put the United States at number one.

South Africa Captures the Spotlight in Global Adventure Tourism

South Africa’s first-place ranking highlights its strong appeal among travellers seeking outdoor experiences and natural attractions. The country offers wildlife safaris, mountain trekking, coastal exploration and wilderness activities across diverse landscapes. Kruger National Park provides opportunities to observe wildlife, while the Drakensberg Mountains attract visitors interested in hiking and scenic adventures. The Garden Route offers coastal landscapes and nature-based activities. United States and Argentina Secure Leading Positions

The United States emerged as the second most preferred adventure destination, followed by Argentina in third place. Both countries offer extensive natural environments suitable for outdoor recreation. The United States features national parks, mountain ranges, forests and desert landscapes that support hiking, camping and wilderness exploration. Argentina attracts adventure enthusiasts through Patagonia, the Andes and its remote natural regions. These destinations provide opportunities for mountain expeditions, scenic journeys and outdoor activities. Their positions demonstrate the continuing appeal of North and South American destinations among experienced international travellers.

American Travellers Place South Africa Ahead of Domestic Destinations

Respondents from the United States selected South Africa as their favourite adventure destination, placing it ahead of their home country. The United States ranked second, while Argentina occupied third position. New Zealand followed in fourth place, with Canada completing the top five. The results highlight American travellers’ interest in destinations across Africa, the Americas and Oceania. New Zealand offers mountain scenery, hiking trails and adventure activities, while Canada provides extensive national parks, forests and wilderness environments. South Africa’s leading position among American respondents contributed to its overall first-place ranking.

Nepal Emerges as the Favourite Among Non-US Travellers

Nepal secured first place among respondents from outside the United States, revealing a different pattern of adventure travel preferences. The Himalayan country is internationally recognised for trekking, mountaineering and high-altitude exploration. Its Everest and Annapurna regions offer established routes through dramatic mountain landscapes. Italy, Australia, Mongolia and South Africa also appeared among the five leading destinations selected by non-US travellers. Italy provides Alpine hiking opportunities, while Australia offers coastal adventures and wilderness exploration. Mongolia attracts interest through its remote grasslands and expansive landscapes. South Africa was the only destination appearing in both geographical groups’ top-five rankings.

Male Travellers Show Strong Preference for South Africa

The survey identified clear differences in destination choices between male and female respondents. Among men, South Africa secured first position, followed by Argentina in second place and the United States in third. Canada ranked fourth, while Australia completed the top five. These countries offer varied adventure experiences, including wildlife observation, mountain trekking and wilderness exploration. Canada’s stronger position among male respondents was one of the notable gender-based differences. Argentina also achieved a particularly high ranking among men, demonstrating its appeal within this group of experienced adventure travellers.

Female Travellers Choose the United States as Their Leading Destination

Female respondents placed the United States at the top of their adventure destination rankings, ahead of South Africa in second position. New Zealand secured third place, followed by Argentina and Italy. The United States offers outdoor activities across national parks, mountains, forests and coastal landscapes. New Zealand is recognised for hiking trails, alpine scenery and adventure experiences, while Italy provides opportunities for mountain exploration. New Zealand achieved a higher position among female respondents than among men. South Africa, Argentina and the United States appeared among the five preferred destinations for both genders.

Adventure Travel Safety Remains an Essential Consideration

Beyond destination preferences, the Global Rescue Autumn 2026 survey examined concerns surrounding travel safety and international mobility. Adventure tourism can involve remote locations, unfamiliar landscapes and physically demanding activities. Travellers undertaking mountain expeditions, wildlife adventures or wilderness journeys may need to assess access to medical services and emergency assistance. Reviewing local conditions, understanding destination-specific risks and preparing appropriate equipment can support safer travel experiences. These considerations become particularly important when exploring isolated regions where transport, healthcare and communication facilities may be limited.

International Adventure Preferences Highlight Different Travel Interests

The survey findings reveal how adventure destination preferences vary across geographical markets and demographic groups. American respondents favoured South Africa, while travellers from outside the United States placed Nepal first. Male participants selected South Africa as their leading destination, whereas female respondents preferred the United States. Argentina, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, Italy and Mongolia also appeared across the different rankings. These results illustrate the diversity of outdoor experiences attracting international attention, from Himalayan trekking and African wildlife exploration to mountain adventures and wilderness journeys across several continents.

Global Adventure Tourism Rankings Offer Insights for the Travel Industry

The Autumn 2026 results provide destination marketing organisations, tour operators and adventure travel businesses with insights into the preferences of experienced international travellers. South Africa’s overall leadership demonstrates its prominent position in the survey, while Nepal’s strong performance among non-US respondents highlights the appeal of Himalayan adventure experiences. The United States and Argentina also maintained leading positions across several categories. The rankings reflect stated destination preferences rather than confirmed travel bookings, visitor arrivals or tourism revenue. Together, the findings present a varied picture of international adventure travel interests during October 2026.
