‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Powers Up Box Office With Highest Opening Weekend of 2026

The box office charts for the weekend of Apr. 3 – Apr. 5 brings one of the biggest opening weekends in a long time, as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie blasted to major success in its opening days. Grossing $130,940,000 in its first week at the domestic box office (along with $372,487,000 worldwide), the sequel to its 2023 predecessor now has the biggest opening weekend of the year both domestically and worldwide. After The Super Mario Bros. Movie raked in over $1.3 billion worldwide in 2023, even amid the less-than-stellar reviews, Mario and Luigi’s second adventure has proven to be a hit with viewers, already ranking as the fourth-highest-grossing film of the entire year.

Ranking a distant second in April’s first weekend was Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary, another major success story in 2026. Pulling in another $30 million domestically in its third week, this book adaptation had its first week of not coming out on top of the box office charts after two weeks in the leading spot in late March. Taking its total run into account, Project Hail Mary has pulled in over $420 million worldwide, which makes it one of the three biggest box office earners of 2026 in the first quarter of the year.

Coming in third place is another new release, The Drama, which caused plenty of off-screen drama in the days leading up to its release, thanks to reports about a controversial plot point. Zendaya and Robert Pattinson’s new film raked in nearly $14.5 million in its first days at the box office. Directly behind this was Hoppers, Disney and Pixar’s latest collaboration, which has stood strong in the box office charts since its debut over a month ago. Pulling in close to $6 million domestically in its fifth week in theaters, it has now grossed over $512 million worldwide, helping it become the second-highest-grossing movie of the year thus far (only behind Pegasus 3).

Looking ahead to the week of Apr. 10 – Apr. 12, more than a handful of new movies are coming to theaters, but a few of them will have limited releases across the country and worldwide. Leading the way is Riz Ahmed’s present-day adaptation of Hamlet, one of William Shakespeare’s most famous dramas reimagined for a new time period. Also on the way is a new rom-com called You, Me, & Tuscany, which will feature Bridgerton‘s Regé-Jean Page and The Little Mermaid‘s Halle Bailey becoming involved as a couple after meeting in an empty Italian villa.
