‘Weapons’ Director Zach Cregger Officially Writing Script for Prequel ‘Gladys’

Weapons was a massive hit upon release, grossing almost $270 million worldwide. Amy Madigan’s lauded performance as the central villain, Aunt Gladys, recently earned the actor her first Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Writer and director Zach Cregger is currently hard at work on the next Resident Evil movie, aiming to bring the video game franchise back to theaters. Still, that hasn’t stopped him from pushing forward with plans for more based on his hit film Weapons.

Cregger first announced plans for a prequel centered on Madigan’s Aunt Gladys last September. Thanks to Deadline, the Weapons prequel now has some official details, including Cregger returning as director. However, it doesn’t look as though he’ll be penning the screenplay alone this time around, with writer Zach Shields signing onto the project. Shields has been thriving in the Monsterverse, having worked on Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and even Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Details about the plot are currently unknown, aside from the movie centering on Madigan’s character before the events of Weapons, fleshing out her origins. The working title of the prequel film is currently Gladys. Cregger seems to be a fan of simple titles, as he has proven with Weapons and Barbarian, and his latest will continue the trend. Further details surrounding the Weapons prequel will be forthcoming as development continues.

This is a developing story with more details to follow.
