When Will Social Security Payments Arrive in August? Here’s the Schedule

Millions of Social Security beneficiaries will receive their August payments on a staggered schedule, with checks going out on different Wednesdays based on recipients’ birth dates. However, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will have seen their payment shifted earlier into July.

The Social Security Administration distributes Retirement, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (RSDI) benefits based on when a beneficiary’s claim was filed and their date of birth.

Recipients who began collecting benefits before May 1997 will get paid Monday, Aug. 3. For everyone else, the payment date depends on birthday: those born between the 1st and 10th of the month will be paid Wednesday, Aug. 12; those born between the 11th and 20th will receive their checks Wednesday, Aug. 19; and those born between the 21st and 31st will be paid Wednesday, Aug. 26.

Most beneficiaries receive their payments through direct deposit into a bank account or a Direct Express debit card.

People who receive benefits based on another person’s work record, such as a spouse or dependent child, are paid according to the primary beneficiary’s birth date rather than their own.

Anyone who does not receive an electronic payment on the scheduled date should first contact their bank.

Recipients who still need to report a late, missing, or stolen payment can call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 or visit their local Social Security office.

Trust Fund Facing Earlier Depletion

The program faces mounting financial pressure, with the fund covering Social Security retirement benefits now projected to run out in late 2032, months sooner than previously expected. The agency attributed part of the earlier timeline to tax changes included in President Donald Trump’s tax law enacted last year.

Without action from Congress, the shortfall could trigger an estimated 28 percent cut to monthly retirement benefits.

SSI Payment Moves Into July

SSI recipients will not see a separate deposit land in August this cycle. SSI payments normally go out on the first of each month, but the agency moves the deposit to the prior business day whenever the first falls on a weekend.

Because Aug. 1 falls on a Saturday this year, the payment intended for August will instead arrive Friday, July 31.

That means SSI recipients will effectively collect two payments in July, the regular July 1 deposit and the early “August” payment on July 31, according to the agency’s calendar. The same pattern repeats in October, when November’s SSI payment will move up to Oct. 30 because Nov. 1 falls on a Sunday.

For 2026, the Social Security Administration caps monthly SSI payments at $994 for an eligible individual and $1,491 for a recipient with an eligible spouse.
