1 Killed, 8 Injured in Shootings After Chicago Tree-Lighting Ceremony

One person was killed and eight others were injured in two separate shootings in downtown Chicago on Friday night following the city’s annual tree-lighting ceremony.

Police say seven people were shot in the first altercation at around 9:50 p.m., all were minors—ranging from age 13 to 17.

Six of the seven are currently listed in “good” condition. The seventh—a 13-year-old—was in “fair” condition.

An hour later, another shooting nearby killed a 14-year-old and seriously wounded an 18-year-old.

The shootings happened not long after the tree-lighting ceremony, which was attended by Mayor Brandon Johnson. President Donald Trump Highlighted the incident on Truth Social on Saturday. He noted that the mayor and governor have refused federal help.

Meanwhile, four people were injured Friday night—in another shooting—at an annual tree-lighting event in Concord, North Carolina, about 30 miles northeast of Charlotte. One victim has since been released from the hospital, though three others are listed in critical condition.

Police say the incident was not a random act of violence—and was between a pair of suspects “who are known to each other.”
