A federal appeals court has upheld California’s law banning gun magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 7–4 that the law does not violate the Second Amendment because large-capacity magazines are not considered “arms.” Thursday’s decision revives a 2016 law that had previously been blocked by lower courts. California argues that limiting magazine size helps prevent mass shootings, while opponents say it restricts the right to self-defense.
