Electric Blanket Sold on Walmart.com Recalled Due to Burn, Fire Injuries

An electric blanket made by a Chinese manufacturer and sold exclusively on Walmart.com was recalled on June 18 after more than 30 injuries were reported.
Thousands of MaxKare-branded blankets were recalled because they pose burn and fire hazards, according to a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) alert.

The blankets are manufactured by Shenzhen Yumo Commerce and Trade Corporation of China.

“Yumo has received 34 reports of overheating, including three reports of burn injuries and two reports that the blankets caught on fire,” the CPSC website stated.

The MaxKare Electric Blankets in question were sold online at www.walmart.com from June 2021 to November 2024.

The machine washable blanket has six heating levels and a nine-hour automatic off function.

Three sizes in brown and gray include 62 inches by 84 inches for twin-size beds, 72 inches by 84 inches for full-size beds, and 84 inches by 90 inches for queen-sized beds.

“The recalled blankets can overheat and ignite,” the CPSC said. “Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled blankets and contact Yumo for instructions on how to properly dispose of the blankets.”

About 8,560 units are impacted. The brand name, MaxKare, and the model numbers HB18A-7284-1, HB18A-8490-2, and HB18A-6284-1 are on the tag attached to the blanket, which were priced at $27 and $80.

Company leaders did not respond to requests for comment.

Consumers are asked to upload a photo of the blanket to [email protected] and confirm disposal in order to get a full refund.

Earlier in June, ready-to-eat chicken fettuccine alfredo meals made by FreshRealm and sold at Walmart stores nationwide were recalled after they were linked to Listeria monocytogenes.

“FSIS [Food Safety and Inspection Service] is concerned that some products may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them,” an FSIS alert stated. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

An investigation at the establishment that produced the product and the product ingredients has not identified the source of contamination.

The FDA website describes listeria monocytogenes as a disease-causing bacterium that can be found in many places, including soil, water, sewage, rotting vegetation, and animals.

“Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms,” the FSIS said. “An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn.”
