Christina Marie Plante disappeared from Star Valley in May 1994. “After 32 years, Christina Marie Plante has been located alive,” said the Gila County Sheriff’s Office in a news release on April 1.
Officials withheld details about her whereabouts and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, citing privacy concerns. Sheriff Adam Shepherd stated that the case remained open after Plante was reported missing when she vanished without a trace from her community.
She was reported missing after leaving her home on foot to go to the stable where her horse was kept; she never returned home.
Extensive searches by law enforcement, volunteers, and regional resources failed to find viable leads at the time. Plante was listed as missing and endangered under suspicious circumstances, according to the missing persons report.
Authorities said Plante’s information was entered into national missing children databases, and flyers were distributed across Arizona and beyond. Investigators periodically revisited the case over the years, reviewing evidence and pursuing new leads as they emerged.
The sheriff’s office credited its Cold Case Unit with bringing renewed attention to the investigation. Detectives employed advances in technology, modern investigative techniques, and thorough case review to develop new leads that ultimately resulted in a breakthrough, the sheriff’s statement said.
Officials confirmed that with Plante’s identity being verified, her status as a missing person was formally resolved. No further details about her current condition, location, or the events leading up to her disappearance were disclosed.
“Out of respect for Christina’s privacy and well-being, additional details will not be released at this time,” the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office said that the case underscores the importance of “cold case review initiatives and the impact of evolving technology in bringing long-awaited answers to families and communities.”
The agency also thanked investigators, analysts, partner agencies, and community members who helped keep the case active over the decades.

NamUs estimates that 4,400 unidentified bodies are recovered each year in the United States, with about 1,000 still unidentified after one year. Meanwhile, medical examiner and coroner offices reported 11,380 unidentified remains on record nationwide as of 2018, according to NamUs.
