Customers of some of Britain’s biggest high street banks are facing the loss of their local branches within weeks as financial institutions overhaul the way they deliver their services. Both Santander and NatWest revealed earlier this year that they are shutting scores of branches as consumers increasingly turn to online banking.
Lloyds has similarly confirmed the closure of Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland branches throughout the UK. A total of 159 confirmed closures are scheduled across the five banks, with the next wave commencing this week. The first branches will shut their doors on Tuesday, May 5, with the majority of the remainder gone by the end of June. Santander, which has already closed numerous branches, will shutter 27 more, with the first of these closing on Tuesday, May 5.
When announcing the decision back in January, the bank confirmed it would be closing 44 branches over the coming months. The initial four closed that month, with the remaining planned closures taking place before the end of May.
The bank attributed the decision to a surge in customers opting for online services, revealing that 96% of all customer transactions are now conducted digitally, reports the Mirror.
NatWest, meanwhile, is closing 15 of its branches nationwide by the end of May. A further 14 will follow in June, with five more set to close by the end of September. Three additional branches are also scheduled to shut next year.
The bank announced the decision in January, stating that the majority of its branches would be replaced by banking hubs where customers could continue to access face-to-face services. In a statement published on its website, it explained: “Banking has changed dramatically in recent years. There’s more demand for mobile and online services, allowing you to benefit from a faster and easier way to bank.
“We understand the closure of your local branch will bring some changes, and we want to make sure you are fully informed and supported every step of the way.” Additional information was made available through its closure guides on the website.
Lloyds Banking Group also confirmed dozens of closures across Britain earlier this year. These will impact customers of Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland.
At the time, it revealed a total of 168 Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland branches would shut over the next two years. The first wave of these has already taken place earlier in 2026.
The bank attributed the closures to a reduction in branch visits as customers increasingly embraced digital banking. It has opened up its remaining branches to all Lloyds Banking Group customers, enabling Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland customers to use any of their locations.
