Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Season 1, Episodes 9 & 10!Somewhat predictably, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Season 1 was a huge hit. As such, certain decisions about the Disney+ show’s future were something of a foregone conclusion. With the show serving as both a sequel to Star Wars: The Clone Wars and a prequel to Star Wars: Rebels, there was always the risk that Shadow Lord would be deemed too inaccessible for casual fans. Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to have factored into the project’s renewal.

Since being introduced in 1999’s The Phantom Menace, Maul has become a favorite in the Star Wars fandom. His enthralling character design and acrobatic fighting style immediately captured everyone’s attention. However, it was his 2012 leap into animation in The Clone Wars that allowed him to become more than just a one-dimensional villain. Shadow Lord is the first time the character has been allowed to take center stage, and it’s paid off massively so far.

Maul fans don’t need to worry about Season 1 being the end of the line for the morally gray Zabrak. Season 2 hasn’t only been confirmed, but it’s already in production. Showrunner Dave Filoni announced the next batch of episodes in April 2026, just days before Season 1’s double-episode premiere. Speaking with TheDirect, Maul voice actor Sam Witwer has confirmed that he and the others have been working on Season 2 “for a while.”

So, it seems as though Shadow Lord Season 2 would have happened regardless of how Season 1 performed. That said, the fact that the show currently has an impressive score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes means Season 2 will be operating from a position of strength rather than trying to redeem Season 1. With Dave Filoni being both Co-President of Lucasfilm and Shadow Lord‘s showrunner, it stands to reason that he didn’t have to fight very hard to have the series continue.

There’s been no official announcement regarding when Shadow Lord will return. The fact that work is already underway on Season 2 suggests the intention of a speedy turnaround, though. So, more episodes could drop around mid 2027. Pushing Season 2 back to early 2028 is possible, but Filoni and company seem committed to avoiding a multi-year break between runs. The same Sam Witwer interview with TheDirect also strongly suggests this is the case: “It’s the usual development cycle,” he said. “I know when it’s coming out, but it’s not a situation where the audiences will have to wait [too] long.”

What’s less clear at this point is how long Shadow Lord Season 2 will be. I think it’s probably safe to assume that the next batch of episodes will at least equal Season 1’s tally of 10 and retain their approximate 20–25 minute runtimes. Similarly, the unconventional approach of dropping two episodes per week suited Season 1 well. This may indeed be the release schedule that Season 2 also adheres to. It really made Star Wars Day shine in 2026, so it would be great if Season 2 could be lined up to do the same thing in 2027.

Witwer has teased that Season 2 will be “interesting,” but that he’s been sworn to secrecy about what’s in store. However, certain storylines can be extrapolated from what happened in Season 1. The return of Dryden Vos in the penultimate episode for the first time since 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, means the writers are almost definitely gearing up to contextualize Maul’s Crimson Dawn cameo from that movie. Plus, the way Darth Vader gazes into the sky when Maul’s ship flees Janix suggests Season 1 won’t be the only time the two franchise icons cross lightsabers.

Perhaps most central in Season 2 will be Maul teaching his new Twi’lek apprentice, Devon Izara (Gideon Adlon), in the ways of the Dark Side of the Force. With Maul secretly sacrificing Master Daki (Dennis Haysbert) in the Season 1 finale, Devon’s evident struggles with trying to avoid falling to the Dark Side have been made even worse as she’s fueled by fresh grief and rage. It’s set to be a sort of canonization of George Lucas’ original ideas for his scrapped Star Wars sequel trilogy. In those movies, Maul would have returned with a Twi’lek apprentice called Darth Talon. The least exciting subplot in Season 2 will surely be Two-Boots’ (Richard Ayoade) attempt to reunite Rylee Lawson (Charlie Bushnell) with his mother in the wake of his father’s death. At least there will be variation in Season 2’s storylines.

The next batch of episodes is expected to be a near-complete reunion of the Season 1 cast. Sam Witwer will obviously reprise his role as Maul, Gideon Adlon is expected to once more voice Devon, and so on. What’s currently uncertain is whether Wagner Moura will be back as Captain Lawson, as the character was last seen wandering into a battle zone to cause a diversion. It’s suggested that he’s doomed, but Star Wars has a habit of bringing back characters who could easily be dead. Shadow Lord‘s main character is a shining example of that trend.

Master Daki’s death means Haysbert’s time on Shadow Lord is probably over, although flashbacks and Force visions could allow him to return. If Darth Vader does make another appearance, he may not even require a voice actor. James Earl Jones’ passing in 2024 means Vader would either need to be recast in Shadow Lord Season 2 or brought to life via AI. The latter option was chosen when augmenting Jones’ voice in the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries, and it was met with mixed reactions. Vader didn’t utter a word in the Shadow Lord Season 1 finale, and it made him even more intimidating. Maybe this is just how he will be portrayed from now on.

There will inevitably be new cast members brought into the fold for Shadow Lord Season 2, either as original characters or as replacements for those who’ve opted not to return. For example, Paul Bettany has already been replaced by Scott Whyte as Dryden Vos. As such, Season 2 may also need to replace Emilia Clarke as Qi’ra if the Game of Thrones star doesn’t want to reprise her Solo role as Vos’ ally. Potential new characters are impossible to predict, so there will need to be more revealed about Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Season 2 before those can be discussed in any great detail.
