Return of the Jedi’ Actor Was 82

Michael Pennington, the veteran stage and screen actor, best known to global audiences as Death Star Commander Moff Jerjerrod in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, has died aged 82.

According to The Telegraph, Pennington passed away on Sunday (May 10), with tributes pouring in shortly after his death was announced. The Star Wars community immediately took to social media to remember his performance as Moff Jerjerrod in Return of the Jedi, with many highlighting the unique depth he brought to his role. Most notably, fans recalled the character’s terrified reaction to the news of the Emperor’s arrival, which led to one of the franchise’s most quotable exchanges, as Vader warns the high-ranking bureaucrat that the Emperor is “displeased” with the lack of progress on the Death Star and that he is “not as forgiving” as him, prompting Jerjerrod to respond in panic and promise that his team will “double” their efforts.

Jerjerrod’s panicked assurance to Darth Vader symbolized the terror that the Dark Lord of the Sith inspired in his subordinates, and the crushing pressure he felt working for him and Emperor Palpatine. “My earliest memory of watching a Star Wars movie was seeing the opening sequence of ROTJ, and being in awe over how commanding Darth Vader was,” one fan recalled on X. “Michael Pennington’s performance here really helped sell how feared he was, even if it was a small role. May he rest in peace.” Another added, “His acting at the start of the movie when he hears the Emperor will be arriving is legendary.”

Outside of Star Wars, Pennington is best remembered for his performances as Laertes in Hamlet and Michael Foot in The Iron Lady. He also appeared in a number of TV shows throughout his long and illustrious career, most recently voicing “The Trust” in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi series Raised by Wolves. His other credits include Footprints, Endeavour, Father Brown, The Escape Artist, Silent Witness, and Into the Storm, as well as a memorable turn as the titular detective in the 1987 TV movie The Return of Sherlock Holmes. He later played Sherlock Holmes’ archenemy, Professor Moriarty, in dramatized BBC Radio adaptations.

Pennington was a towering figure in British theater and a renowned Shakespearean performer who co-founded The English Shakespeare Company with Michael Bogdanov in 1986. He is often celebrated for his lead performance in Hamlet, but he portrayed nearly every other Shakespearean lead as well, including King Lear, Macbeth, and Richard II. He also received recognition and acclaim for his one-man shows, specifically Anton Chekhov, which he performed on and off for over 20 years, and his frequent collaborations with Dame Judi Dench, whom he shared a prolific professional partnership and a lifelong friendship with.
