The second official Game of Thrones spin-off ,after the prequel House of the Dragon, is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which first premiered at the beginning of the year to rave reviews. Most of the accolades centered around the on-screen chemistry between the two leads of the show, as well as its heartfelt story. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms stood out in the fantasy genre thanks to its scale and subtlety, though it seems like viewers will have to wait a bit longer until the second season.
In an ironic twist of fate, the production on Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been canceled, at least for the time being. What also made the series so different, aside from its small scale when compared to Game of Thrones, is how efficient the production team of the series is. Showrunner Ira Parker has spoken in depth about the series of Hedge Knight novellas written by George R.R. Martin, of which three have been released. Specifically, there is an internal goal of making a season based on each separate novel, producing one a year so as not to depart from the source material and use the actor Dexter Sol Ansell while he is still in a similar age range to Egg in the stories.
To that end, production began on Season 2 in Belfast, Ireland earlier this year, and eventually moved to Gran Canaria, Spain, as the locale best suited the context of the story, titled “The Sworn Sword.” Much of the conflict in the novella (and more than likely the second season as well) is due to a drought that has plagued the Seven Kingdoms. However, filming had to be halted and production was canceled altogether due to historic rainfall that Gran Canaria hadn’t seen in 15 years. It’s an unfortunate and ironic reason for the production to be canceled, as many of the sets had been flooded in a setting intended to be suffering a drought.
What this means for the release date of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 remains to be seen. The hope was that the new batch of episodes would arrive at the same time next year as when Season 1 premiered, though given the level of flooding and what it had reportedly done to the sets of the film, viewers may have to wait a bit longer than anticipated. Long waits between seasons of television are nothing new, though A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms might have stood out from the rest thanks to what could have been a fast turnaround time between seasons.
Still, the series isn’t canceled altogether, and it’s likely that the new season will still be released sometime in 2027. At the time of this writing, nothing else has been reported about what the production plans on doing. Whether HBO decides to move the shooting location elsewhere or wait for better conditions to film in Spain remains to be seen. Hopefully, the production team behind A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will find a way to keep their filming as efficient as possible.
