Director Justin Hardy has passed away from a heart attack at age 61.
The director and producer was the son of Robin Hardy, an English author and director best known for his 1973 horror cult classic The Wicker Man, starring Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee. In 2011, Robin Hardy wrote and directed The Wicker Tree, which was more of a spiritual successor to The Wicker Man than an official sequel, and Justin Hardy had recently added his own entry to the pantheon, Wrath of the Gods, as a conclusion to the trilogy.
Wrath of the Gods is based on recently discovered scripts and concepts from his late father, and was set to make its debut at Frightfest in London on Aug. 28. His family said in a statement that they were “devastated to share that Justin Hardy passed away [on Friday],” adding (via The Guardian): “He was so full of life right to the end, and incredibly energised to be working towards premiering his latest film this month. We are all so proud of him and heartbroken he won’t be with us at his premiere. He was a man of family, of boundless creativity and of devotion for everyone he held dear.”
Describing him as having an “incredible appetite for life,” his brother Dominic Hardy said (via BBC News): “We’ve lost him and we’ve lost that larger-than-life presence looking over us all. He really became a filmmaker in his own right.” Dominic also described Justin’s work on Wrath of the Gods as “incredibly beautiful” and that it had been a ‘great satisfaction” for him to create something new, while publicist Ned Mansfield told Deadline: “Justin was determined to complete his father’s vision for The Wicker Man in his final years.”
The Wicker Man followed Sergeant Neil Howie’s (Woodward) horrifying visit to Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl, where he is shocked by the island’s Pagan practices led by Lord Summerisle (Lee). The movie received cult classic status within the horror community, earninga 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and receiving a less-than-stellar 2006 remake starring Nicolas Cage.
This legacy led Hardy to direct the documentary Children of the Wicker Man (2024). Co-written with Dominic, the documentary explored the impact the movie had on him and his family, as well as insight into its production. Outside of this, Hardy directed several historical movies and documentaries for numerous broadcasters, including CNN and the BBC. He was also nominated for a BAFTA for The Relief of Belsen (2007), a television drama on the liberation of the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen.
