Elon Musk’s Department Of Government Efficiency goes after the penny, posting on X that “the penny costs over 3 cents to make and cost US taxpayers over $179 million in FY2023.” U.S. Mint said it cost 3.7 cents to make one penny in 2023. This is more expensive than it was the previous year, by 20 percent, largely because of rising metal costs.
