Tentatively slated for a January 2027 release, HBO Max’s hit medical TV drama The Pitt is shaping up to look quite different in Season 3. In addition to a shorter time jump to accommodate the inclement weather of a fall/winter setting, several new students and residents will move on to different positions, which keeps the revolving door at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center open for newly appointed recruits.
There’s also the question of Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) taking off on a spirit quest to clear his mind, decompress, and refocus efforts following a string of personal and professional hardships. While it would be unthinkable for The Pitt to continue without Wyle leading the charge, fans of the highly immersive emergency room series can rest easier knowing that many beloved main characters are poised to return. While additional casting information is sure to be divulged between now and January, here’s everyone confirmed to return for The Pitt Season 3 so far.
Will Dr. Robby Return From His Sabbatical in Season 3?
HBO’s urgent and timely medical drama The Pitt left viewers uneasy when the head honcho, attending physician Dr. Michael “Robby” Rabinovitch (Wyle), felt it necessary to go on a sabbatical at the end of Season 2. Burnt out and struggling with his mental well-being after losing several patients, Dr. Robby planned to hop on his motorcycle and go on a spirit quest to find himself, recharge his batteries, and let the workplace stress wash away.
While it would be akin to blasphemy if Wyle left permanently, showrunner R. Scott Gemmill has suggested that Dr. Robby will remain away from the trauma center for several months (via Entertainment Weekly). It’s also known that Season 3 2ill feature a much shorter time jump (less than a full year), with the story set in the fall and winter to explore bad-weather-related trauma. So, where does that leave Dr. Robby’s return?
According to TV Line, Dr. Robby will return to The Pitt for Season 3, but he will be going on sabbatical for longer than expected. As Gemmill states:
“One of the things we play in Season 3 is that he [Robby] comes back, but he doesn’t come back to the hospital right away. He will show up [in Episode 1], but he’s been away from work longer than three months.”
Dr. Frank Langdon Will Return
Senior resident Dr. Frank Langdon (Patrick Ball) has also been confirmed to return in Season 3 of The Pitt. Part of Robby’s core medical team during the last round of shifts, Dr. Langdon has slowly overcome his drug dependency and penchant for stealing medication at work and has become Robby’s primary protégé. In the Season 2 finale, Landon and Robby get into an intense argument about Robby’s mental health, which is sure to be addressed in Season 3.
Dr. Cassie McKay Will Return
Fiona Dourif is set to return to Season 3 of The Pitt as Dr. Cassie McKay. The 42-year-old third-year resident has been embroiled in a messy legal custody battle for her son, Harry, as a single mother. After overcoming legal trouble involving an ankle bracelet that she deactivates at work in Season 1, Dr. McKay is on much surer footing in Season 2 as she assumes a larger leadership role in the ED. As she finds a healthy balance between work and family, Dr. McKay’s role will expand in Season 3.
Dr. Melissa King Will Return
The fan favorite Dr. Melissa “Mel” King (Taylor Dearden) is also returning for The Pitt‘s third season. The neurodivergent third-year resident has an autistic twin sister, Becca, for whom she acts as a caregiver. Shattering stereotypes and societal stigmas, Mel is an invaluable member of the trauma unit. She brings a fresh perspective to medical cases that her colleagues tend to lack in a high-stress environment.
Dr. Trinity Santos Will Return
The brash and outspoken Dr. Trinity Santos (Isa Briones) will return to The Pitt’s ED in Season 3. Dr. Santos began as an intern in Season 1. Now a second-year resident, Dr. Santos is a cynical, jaded bully of sorts still reeling from a history of self-harm and deep psychological trauma. However, despite her harsh demeanor, Dr. Santos is exceptionally competent at her job and remains dedicated to providing urgent medical care.
Dr. Dennis Whitaker Will Return
The kind and soft-hearted Dr. Dennis Whitaker (Gerran Howell) is also set to return to the popular medical TV show in Season 3. The fourth-year student-turned resident comes from a much smaller town in Nebraska and has to adjust to the grueling schedule at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Among the more compassionate and empathetic doctors, Dr. Whitaker is often on hand to console his colleagues after they lose a patient.
Along with the others listed above, Whitaker’s return was confirmed by Gemmill when TV Line asked if the core team of Langdon, McKay, Mel, Santos, and Whitaker would return for Season 3. Gemmill’s response was, “Pretty much. Yep.”
Dr. Javadi Will Return in a New Position
Dr. Victoria Javadi (Shabana Azeez) has also been confirmed to return to The Pitt for Season 3. At the end of The Pitt Season 2, the 20-year-old fourth-year med student decided to switch paths and focus on emergency psychiatry. When asked directly if that storyline would continue and keep Dr. Javadi deeply involved with the emergency department, Gemmill quipped, “Yep.”
Nurse Emma Nolan Will Return
The optimistic and idealistic nurse, Emma Nolan (Laëtitia Hollard), will also come back to the bingeworthy medical drama for Season 3. As a recent nursing school grad who learns from Nurse Dana (Katherine LaNasa), Emma began her arc in Season 2 as a wide-eyed neophyte who steadily becomes more comfortable and confident in her first professional role. A delightful force in an otherwise grim atmosphere, Emma’s return is a welcome one indeed.
When asked if Emma would return now that med students James Ogilvie (Lucas Iverson) and Joy Kwon (Irene Choi) are likely to move on, Gemmill told TV Line:
“Yes, she’s coming back. Emma will return. And we may see the other two briefly. Hard to say at this point.”
Dr. Parker Ellis Will Return
The last of the confirmed returning characters in Season 3 of The Pitt is Dr. Parker Ellis (Ayesha Harris). Following the departure of Dr. Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh), Harris is being promoted to a series regular. In the first two seasons, Dr. Ellis was a senior resident who worked the graveyard shift. In Season 3, Dr. Ellis is expected to switch to a daytime shift, where she will take on a larger role and more responsibility.
While more casting tidbits are sure to be revealed between now and the Season 3 premiere in January 2027, that’s every confirmed character returning to The Pitt so far. Which character are you the most excited to see again?
