A plane has crashed into the side of a mountain, with search and rescue operatives dispatched to the remote region in a desperate bid to find any potential survivors.
It is not known what caused the single-engine aircraft to smash into the north side of Dolores Peak in Colorado on Thursday, but first responders are now being choppered in to the crash site.
The San Miguel Sheriff’s Office confirmed that it was responding to reports of a plane crash at the remote mountain’s peak, located roughly 15 miles southwest of the historic town of Telluride in southwestern Colorado.
San Miguel Sheriff’s Office deputies, Search and Rescue operatives, the Bureau of Land Management and personnel from the Telluride Fire Protection District are all en route to in response to the emergency callout.
It is not yet known whether anyone survived the crash.
The San Miguel Sheriff’s Office said in a statement: “A single engine aircraft has crashed on the north side of Dolores Peak approximately 15 miles SW of Telluride.
“Teams are being inserted via helicopters to determine if there are survivors.”
The rescue operation remains ongoing as emergency crews attempt to reach the remote crash site, with Dolores Peak a remote, high-elevation summit surrounded by rugged backcountry terrain.
