Taylor Sheridan’s Action Thriller Hit Spin-Off is Officially The King of TV With 15 Million Viewers

Broadcast TV gets underestimated all the time, and CBS just gave it another strong week. During the network’s fall 2026 premiere week, from Oct. 4 through 10, CBS averaged 8.63 million viewers in Nielsen‘s live-plus-seven-day multiplatform data, up 14% from the 7.59 million it drew during the same stretch last year. The network says it landed seven of the ten most-watched shows across both broadcast and streaming, with six different series topping 10 million viewers, including 60 Minutes, NCIS, Sheriff Country, NCIS: New York, and FBI.

Those are huge numbers by any standard, and far beyond what most streaming originals ever manage. The more interesting part, though, is which show finished at No. 1, because it’s one plenty of critics were cool on from the start and one that never seemed like an obvious fit for network TV. That show is Marshals, the Yellowstone spin-off that follows Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton out of ranch life and into a U.S. Marshals unit in Montana.

Its second season premiere week drew 15.14 million multiplatform viewers, making it the No. 1 entertainment program of the week in both linear and streaming, with Justin Hartley’s Tracker right behind at 13.86 million in its fourth season return. The two also finished first and second among streaming viewership alone, which is a quietly notable detail given they were competing against every streaming original on the market that week, not just other broadcast shows. The 15.14 million figure actually represents a slight gain over the show’s 15 million season one average, so this doesn’t read like premiere-week curiosity so much as a retained audience showing back up.

The series, created by showrunner Spencer Hudnut with Sheridan executive producing rather than writing, was a gamble on two fronts. It converted the serialized prestige-adjacent Yellowstone formula into an episodic network procedural, and it aired on CBS rather than going straight to Paramount+ like most of Sheridan’s output, a call CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach made based on the strength of Yellowstone and Tulsa King on linear. When budget concerns came up around putting a Sheridan-branded show on broadcast, Reisenbach answered that “we don’t do cheap,” and the bet paid off almost immediately.

The March debut pulled 9.52 million same-day viewers, the best scripted launch without a football lead-in in years, and the show averaged a franchise-leading 19.3 million in 35-day multiplatform viewing across its first season. All of that happened despite a 48% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score sitting even lower, which arguably tells you more about who actually watches these shows than the aggregators do. There’s a reasonable argument that Marshals has become the de facto flagship of the Yellowstone franchise almost by accident. Dutton Ranch carries the Beth and Rip storyline on Paramount+, but it’s the CBS procedural that commands the biggest weekly audience in the family, and season two has started strong with an 8.2 million same-day premiere ahead of all other scripted competition.
