‘The Invite’ Lands Digital Streaming Release Date

Between the box office-breaking headlines of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey, and Obsession, Olivia Wilde’s third directorial feature, The Invite, has quietly become one of the summer’s big sleeper hits. The Invite stars Wilde and Seth Rogen as a couple going through a rut who invite their mysterious neighbors, played by Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, over for dinner for a night of deep conversation, awkward moments, and secrets waiting to be revealed. A remake of the Spanish-language film The People Upstairs, The Invite has become a surprise box office hit that is finally making its way to streaming.

When to Stream is reporting that The Invite will be available for rental and purchase on paid video-on-demand platforms starting Aug. 11, 2026. This comes 46 days after the movie’s initial limited release on June 26 and 32 days after its wide release on July 10. No word on when The Invite will stream on HBO Max as part of A24’s deal with the platform.

The Invite debuted at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 24, 2026, and became an instant hit. The movie sparked an intense bidding war among multiple parties, including Netflix, Apple TV, Focus Features, Neon, Black Bear, Sony Pictures, and Searchlight Pictures. Ultimately, A24 won out, paying $12 million for the film distribution rights. Wilde reportedly went with A24 because the studio guaranteed a theatrical release.

It was an investment that paid off, as The Invite has grossed $22.8 million domestically and $40.1 million worldwide. The film currently holds a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Invite reportedly played well with the growing Gen Z movie-going demographic, as Variety reports that a quarter of the audience was under 25 and the majority was around 35 years old. It is the rare non-horror indie hit at the box office since the COVID-19 pandemic, and one that offers audiences something different in the summer blockbuster season.

According to PostTrak exit polls, 90% of opening weekend audiences recommended seeing The Invite on the big screen rather than at home. While that certainly helped the movie at the box office, it doesn’t mean the movie will lose any of its charm when it moves to streaming. In fact, positive word of mouth from theatrical moviegoers will likely increase demand among audiences who did not get a chance to see The Invite in theaters, prompting them to stream it. Those online rentals and purchases will only add to The Invite‘s already impressive profits, making it a true breakout hit, like previous Sundance Film Festival entries such as Little Miss Sunshine, Juno, and (500) Days of Summer.
