‘The X-Files’ Star David Duchovny Confirms There Have Been “Talks” of Reboot Return

Patrick Cavanaugh is an Editor at MovieWeb and has been writing about movies and TV for 15 years. He’s covered everything from superheroes to Star Wars, as well as events like San Diego Comic-Con, Star Wars Celebration, the Sundance Film Festival, South by Southwest, and more. One time, Michael Shannon said to Patrick, “You’re funny.”

Whenever any reboot or revival of a beloved property is announced, there’s immediately speculation about which elements of the original project could be included, and The X-Files is no exception. The sci-fi series is one of the most iconic programs of the ’90s, and its expansive lore has limitless potential to continue for years and in a variety of mediums. More than just the mythology, though, another key to the series’ success was the main characters of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, respectively.

Ryan Coogler is developing the new series, though we haven’t gotten definitive updates on how this new series will connect to the original program. Anderson herself has recently claimed that she has read scripts for the project, confirming the series is “going to be f*cking cool,” and that leaves Duchovny to weigh in on the project. In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Duchovny has confirmed that there have been “talks” about potentially being involved in the series, though failed to offer anything more substantial about that possible involvement. The actor noted:

“There have been talks about certain things, but there’s nothing concrete at this point.”

As far as whether he has read the same scripts as Anderson, Duchovny admitted, “No, I haven’t. I’ve spoken to Ryan, and I have a general sense of what it is, but I haven’t read the script.” Knowing that there have at least been talks about “certain things” is promising, yet Duchovny seems to be almost oblivious to anything about the project, as he addressed his own emotions about reprising the role, “I don’t know what the world of his show is. I don’t know if my character exists in that show. It’s all hypothetical to me, so I can’t really address it.”
