The year of Anne Hathaway continues as the first teaser for the psychological thriller Verity has been released. Based on the book of the same name by author Colleen Hoover, Verity stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett. The story follows young writer Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), who is hired by Jeremy Crawford (Harnett) to help finish the latest manuscript of his wife Verity Crawford’s (Hathaway) best-selling series after she suffered a mysterious accident.
Amazon MGM has released the first official trailer for Verity. The trailer teases the film’s tone as a dark psychological thriller, with Hathaway’s character at the center of the story, seemingly haunting Johnson’s. Verity is directed by Michael Showalter, who previously worked with Hathaway and Amazon MGM on the romance film The Idea of You. Verity will open on Oct. 2 and you can see the trailer below:
Verity will be the fifth and final film of Hathaway’s in 2026, which is shaping up to be a big year for the Academy Award-winning actress. Her first film of the year was Mother Mary, while The Devil Wears Prada 2 will kick off the summer movie season on May 1. Hathaway will then appear in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which will then be followed by The End of Oak Street. Verity was originally set to open in theaters on May 15, 2026, but was delayed to October 2026, to both capitalize on the Halloween season and to avoid over-saturation of Hathaway following The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Mother Mary.
Verity is the fourth feature film adaptation of author Colleen Hoover’s work. The first was the breakout box-office hit It Ends with Us, starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. Following the impressive box office of It Ends with Us, a slew of Colleen Hoover adaptations were put into development. The first to be released was an adaptation of 2019’s Regretting You, which hit theaters last year, and continued with Reminders of Him, landing in theaters last month.
Verity is looking to cash in on the popularity of The Housemaid last year, another psychological thriller that was based on a best-selling novel that ultimately grossed $399 million worldwide. With a horror-friendly October release date, an all-star cast, and an adaptation of a popular book, Verity could be a box office hit.
