Roberto Orci
, one of the co-writers of some of the biggest sci-fi franchises in the 21st century, has sadly passed away at 51 following a battle with kidney disease at his home in Los Angeles. Born in Mexico City on July 20, 1973, Orci moved to the United States with his family when he was ten years old. He developed a lifelong passion for sci-fi franchises like Star Trek and Transformers, two series that he was instrumental in reshaping.
Roberto Orci’s passing is certainly one that will leave shock waves, as he was one of the most prolific screenwriters of the 2000s and 2010s whose work likely influenced many. His work on Transformers and Star Trek reshaped both franchises and kick-started a new era in sci-fi blockbusters. Orci’s brother, J.R., released a statement following the writer’s passing.
“He was a visionary storyteller with a boundless heart and a beautiful soul. But beyond his creative talents, he was a compassionate friend who would put his life on hold to help a stranger and find room in his home for the most overlooked pup at the shelter.”

J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek’ reboot relaunched the franchise, and is currently a hit on streaming.
At the age of 17, Orci met his future writing partner, Alex Kurtzman, at Crossroads, a private school in Santa Monica, California. At 24, Kurtzman and Orci became showrunners on the Sam Raimi-produced series Hercules: The Legendary Journey. The duo later met J.J. Abrams and developed the series Alias, forming another lifelong partnership where Orci would co-write the script for Abrams’s Mission: Impossible 3, Star Trek, and Star Trek Into Darkness, serving as a producer on all three Kelvin timeline Star Trek films. In 2005, Orci co-wrote The Island and The Legend of Zorro scripts. Impressed with The Island script, Michael Bay brought Orci and Kurtzman on to write the script for 2007’s Transformers. Orci returned to co-write the script for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Orci and Kurtzman also wrote the script for 2011’s Cowboys & Aliens, which was a sci-fi dream team project bringing together some of Hollywood’s biggest creative talents like Jon Favreau, Ron Howard, Damon Lindeloff, Harrison Ford, and Daniel Craig. Following their success reviving Transformers and Star Trek, Kurtzman and Orci were brought on board to shape Sony’s new plans for The Amazing Spider-Man series and spin-offs. Orci co-wrote the script for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
In 2014, Kurtzman and Orci ended their long partnership together. Kurtzman was set to work on The Amazing Spider-Man spin-off plans for Sony while Orci was looking to make the leap to director with Star Trek 3. Orci however departed Star Trek 3, which later became Star Trek Beyond. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 marked Orci’s final film writing credit, but he remained a successful television writer and producer. He relaunched Hawaii Five-0 in 2010 and followed it up with the series Sleepy Hollow and Limitless. His last two credits were as a producer on Now You See Me 2 and The Mummy, directed by Alex Kurtzman.
Orci had not worked in over seven years, and was public about his struggle with alcoholism, which saw him hospitalized multiple times for his condition and undergo rehab. In recent years, Orci was also the subject of controversy. In August 2024, Orci’s wife, Adele Heather Taylor, accused the writer of sexual assault, alleging that Orci was a “bipolar alcoholic who would fly into fits of violence against her.” The couple separated in December 2022. Orci denied these allegations.
