Fireman Charged With Wife’s Murder After Reading Her Diary

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman announced that a City of Glendale firefighter-paramedic has been charged with allegedly murdering his wife in their North Hollywood home.

Andrew Jimenez, 45, was arraigned on Jan. 23 at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center for the alleged murder of his spouse Mayra Jimenez, 55, at their home in the 5600 block of Suna Summa Avenue earlier in the week.

“The domestic violence death of Mayra Jimenez is a devastating reminder of the persistent scourge of intimate partner violence in our communities,” Hochman said in a statement posted online.

“No one, including those sworn to protect others, is above the law, and we will hold the defendant accountable for this horrific crime and bring justice to Ms. Jimenez and her loved ones.”

Jimenez faces 26 years to life in prison if convicted as charged. Attorney Jose Romero has been retained to represent Jimenez.

“Our office is currently in contact with law enforcement regarding a diary of the decedent, apparently read moments before the homicide that verified infidelity by the decedent,” Romero said in a statement obtained by KTLA.

Romero did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication.

The suspect had worked with the Glendale Fire Department since April 28, 2008, according to a City of Glendale press release, and was placed on administrative leave effective immediately.

“Our condolences are with the victim’s family and loved ones,” Fire Chief Jeff Brooks said. “We are prepared to support those impacted by this tragedy, and we are also ensuring our firefighters and staff have access to support resources as they process this loss.”

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officials said that Jimenez entered the Northeast Community Police Station at 4 a.m. on Jan. 21, and requested that officers conduct a welfare check on his wife.

When officers responded and entered the residence, they discovered a woman with blunt force trauma who had succumbed to her injuries.

“Their investigation revealed that the victim and suspect were in a marital relationship, and that this was an incident of domestic violence,” law enforcement stated in a press release.

Jimenez’s bail was set at $2 million. He is charged with one count of murder with an allegation of using an axe as a deadly weapon.

The incident is an isolated event and there is no threat to public safety, according to authorities.

“Too often, cases of domestic violence go unreported and have the potential to end tragically, as in this instance,” Hochman added. “I want to urge anyone experiencing or witnessing domestic abuse to contact the Los Angeles County Domestic Violence Hotline at (800) 978-3600.”
