Ana De Armas has gained quite a fanbase over the last decade, with her roles in Knives Out, No Time to Die and John Wick spin-off Ballerina keeping her in the public eye. However, her appearance in Danny Boyle’s fantasy Yesterday, or more accurately the lack of it, led to some of her most dedicated supporters launching legal action against the studio behind the movie, and soon the film that caused so much controversy will be leaving 
Netflix.
Yesterday imagines a world where only one person remembers the existence of The Beatles and uses this twist of fate to turn around their struggling musical career. The film itself was a reasonable hit, but its controversy centered on de Armas appearing in the trailer for the movie and in Google cast listings, but not in the final film itself as her scenes were cut. However, two fans of the actress who rented the film purely to see the Cuban star’s scenes attempted to sue for $5 million after claiming the trailer was false advertising, unjust enrichment, and a violation of unfair competition.
Despite their purchase of the movie only costing them $3.99, the case ended up being thrown out by a judge, who deemed any issues faced by the pair a “self-inflicted injury” and ended up settling their claim, but Universal were still left fuming at having spent two years and thousands in legal costs to defend what they called “a patently frivolous lawsuit.”
For those who don’t mind the lack of Ana de Armas in the movie, Yesterday is streaming on Netflix until the end of the month, when it will no doubt depart for another streaming platform.
Ana de Armas Has Put ‘Yesterday’ Behind Her
While de Armas’ appearance in Yesterday was reportedly sidelined when test audiences believed her character distracted from the main love interest of the movie, Lily James, being cut from the role has certainly not been preying on her mind as she has gone from success to success in the years since.
As well as starring in Rian Johnson’s first Knives Out movie and Netflix’s controversial Marilyn Monroe biography Blonde, de Armas has carved herself quite an action-orientated career path. She has appeared with Chris Evans in The Gray Man and Ghosted, aided Daniel Craig’s James Bond in No Time to Die, and gone up against Keanu Reeves’ John Wick in Ballerina.
In 2025, she starred with Jude Law and Sydney Sweeney in Ron Howard’s unfairly ignored survival thriller Eden. While the actress does not have a string of upcoming roles confirmed for the future, it will not be long until she does appear somewhere else. Unfortunately, anyone checking out Yesterday on Netflix before it leaves at the end of the month, will not be able to get their fix of the actress there.
