After Creature Commandos officially kicked off the new DC Universe under DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran in 2024, the saga moved to theaters with Superman in Jul. 2025. Behind David Corenswet’s Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, Gunn’s movie performed admirably in theaters, earning stellar reviews from fans and critics while grossing almost $620 million, the highest total for any superhero movie last year. This film introduced a massive helping of supporting characters for the Man of Steel, setting the stage for him and his team to shine on the big screen for years to come.
One character that stole the show throughout the movie was Krypto the Super-Dog, who was depicted in live-action for only the third time after his appearances in episodes of Smallville and Titans. Brought to life through CGI, Krypto was based on Gunn’s real rescue dog, Ozu, and turned out to be a bit of a menace for Superman and anyone else who crossed his path from start to finish. While Krypto is close to returning to theaters in an even bigger role in the DCU, he will also be the leading man (dog) in his own new series that was just confirmed for development.
Reported by The Wrap from the Annecy International Animation Festival, DC Animation and DC Studios announced plans for a new animated series titled Krypto, which is now in development. The series comes from C.H. Greenblatt, best known for his work on Cartoon Network’s Chowder, HBO Max’s Jellystone!, and Nickelodeon’s Harvey Beaks. The synopsis for the new Krypto series reads as follows:
“When he’s not hanging out with Superman or Supergirl, Krypto tags along with a gang of misfit criminal wannabes who live down the block, and they soon discover he’s a ball of destructive, lovable energy worse than any of them! As he follows them into misadventures and poorly laid plans, Krypto’s pure nature slowly ends up redeeming them, whether they want it or not.”
This show seems to be putting Krypto in uncharted territory, as he will have a chance to redeem a group of criminals by using his adorable and chaotic nature to his advantage. As was the case in Superman, his appearance in this series is sure to bring smiles to viewers all over the world, as the puppy delivered memorable moments every time he was on screen in his first DCU movie.
Krypto will also be a major player in the upcoming Supergirl movie, as Milly Alcock’s heroine will be on a quest for revenge after Krypto is gravely injured. His live-action future beyond this movie is still unknown, but for now, he will remain a star attraction for the growing DC Universe.
The Krypto series does not have a confirmed release timeframe.
