Disney’s live-action Tangled remake has rounded out its cast ahead of production beginning this June. The reimagining of the 2010 animated movie boasts a star-studded ensemble of rising stars and established talent, with former DC superhero Teagan Croft set to let her hair down to play the lead role of Rapunzel. She will be joined by Milo Manheim as charming thief Flynn Rider and Kathryn Hahn as the villainous Mother Gothel, but the plucky princess won’t be short of friends (or foes) as a Star Wars favorite is making the jump from the galaxy far, far away to the picturesque kingdom of Corona for the forthcoming adaptation.
After establishing himself as a pivotal player in the modern Star Wars era, most recently starring in Disney+ and Lucasfilm’s critically lauded Andor series, Diego Luna is ready for a very different kind of adventure. The actor officially wrapped up his Star Wars tenure with a final outing as Cassian Andor in the second season of the live-action spy thriller series, which served as a prequel to the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but he has remained booked and busy in the aftermath of the sci-fi masterpiece. Luna’s latest role will see him expand his Disney footprint further as he is the newest addition to Tangled, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The outlet notes that Luna has “joined the project in a role created specifically for the feature,” but specific details about his character – including their name and background – are currently being kept under wraps. It is also unclear whether he will be required to sing for the musical adventure, but he certainly has the chops to do so, as he previously showcased his vocal abilities in The Book of Life and Kiss of the Spider Woman. He is one of the highest-profile names attached to the Tangled remake alongside Hahn, who also headlined her own Disney+ series Agatha All Along, which put her firmly in the frame for the Mother Gothel role.
The live-action Tangled remake is being directed by Michael Gracey, who is best known for helming the musical hit The Greatest Showman and the Robbie Williams biopic Better Man. The feature will incorporate several musical moments, including original hits and new compositions, while the story itself is expected to remain loyal to the original, with a few twists along the way – hence Luna’s newly created role. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Thor: Love and Thunder) and Michael Montemayor (Everyone I Know is Dead) are the screenwriting team behind the adaptation, tasked with reimagining the original animated classic for a new generation.
The project was initially shelved following the underwhelming box office performance and backlash surrounding the 2025 Snow White remake, which seemingly prompted Disney executives to re-evaluate which animated hits truly warranted the live-action treatment. Tangled is one that the studio ultimately decided to move forward with after reportedly scrapping plans for an animated Tangled 2. It joins a growing roster of modern adaptations, with the highly anticipated remake of Moana, which sees Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui and newcomer Catherine Laga’aia as the titular protagonist, next up on the slate.
