Thursday horse racing tips
- HAMILTON
3.22: Sallaal 11/10 (1pt)
3.55: Duke’s Command 7/2 (1pt) - WORCESTER
5.05: Paddy De Pole 15/8 (NAP – 2pts) - LEOPARDSTOWN
6.52: Purview 11/8 (1pt)
Sallaal
Would be very keen on Theoryofeverything but he has to carry 8lb more than Sallaal, as the tip gets a three-year-old allowance.
Additionally the David O’Meara-trained horse is facing a 4lb rise for that victory but gets a 5lb rise in this contest.
Sallaal is dangerously unexposed and didn’t quite live up to expectation in listed company on his return as a three-year-old.
But that was a tough contest and did then justify odds-on favouritism over course and distance in May.
He faces a 6lb rise for that win but after just three races already at this mark, he’s sure to keep progressing for the in-form yard and trainer Roger Varian.
Duke’s Command
Might well be the favourite but still presents a bit of value at 4/1 for trainer David O’Meara.
Jockey Mark Winn has a bit of a concerning strike-rate coming into this but so do a lot of jockeys after 20+ runs in two weeks.
But he’s got the ride on a big favourite in what seems to be wide open in the betting.
This horse has been given a rise of 7lb since winning at Doncaster and then placing a close second at Haydock last time out.
He faced a tough task three starts ago on seasonal debut on what was his first run for O’Meara but also his first such run in 534 days.
Ought to carry on his progress as a four-year-old and there’s more to like about him than a lot of his rivals, even with the weight difference.
Paddy De Pole
There’s just three runners for this Class 3 Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase.
Jubilant is by Doctor Dino and that really does carry a lot of weight nowadays for horses as they progress, especially over longer distances.
The James Owen-trained gelding is still only six-years-old but has shown promise over fences already.
With one win, on chase debut, and a third place finish over course and distance two weeks ago.
The Paul Nicholls-trained Paddy De Pole is a bit of a danger though, making his chase debut.
Nicholls often gets it right from the off for novice chasers and he could have a say down at this workable mark.
He placed just five lengths off Investment Manager at Newton Abbot over 3m2f on his penultimate run, back in September.
It’s taken a while to get him back but I expect it’s because he’s been busy getting used to chasing and needed a quick return over hurdles back in May to show where he’s at.
So they’ve taken a little extra time to get things right from May to July to prep him more.
He almost only ever runs now during the spring to the summer so this is an ideal time for him to make his chase debut.
When it comes to his form over 3m2f he’s been third and second, twice so it’s interesting that he’s making this stamina trip for his chase debut which should be ideal too.
Purview
The Group 3 Meld Stakes is always an interesting one at Leopardstown.
Previous winners include Diego Velazquez, Japan and Famous Name.
It’s quite common for three-year-olds to win too often making better timings than the older winners of the race.
Diego Velazquez won this last year under Ryan Moore with a time of just 1:52.32.
Of course the ground plays a huge part, but in general the allowance gives the three-year-olds, especially those who are greats in the making to set great times.
Aidan O’Brien has won this race three times in the last six renewals, but also only three in the last 16.
His biggest chance comes from Expanded, who Wayne Lordan takes the ride on.
While Colin Keane is on board another big favourite for Juddmonte owners, with Purview.
The Weld-trained colt has only been seen twice and on his second race, which came here, it was the Group 3 Derby Trial Stakes where he placed second to Delacroix.
Galen has to carry 12lb more than this unexposed colt and that will surely not be enough to give him a chance.
