President Donald Trump on Saturday urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune to cancel summer recess so that his nominees can be confirmed sooner rather than later.
Congress is scheduled to kick off its summer recess on Aug. 2 and return to Capitol Hill on Sept. 8. The recess is typically intended as a break that allows members of Congress to return home and visit with the constituents in their respective states.
Trump’s push to cancel the upcoming recess comes fresh off his signing of the “Genius Act,” the first major federal cryptocurrency bill, into law.
It also follows the GOP’s success in passing Trump’s massive policy package that became known as the “Big, Beautiful Bill.”
NTD called Thune’s press office for comment on Saturday evening but did not receive a response by publication.
Trump and Thune recently celebrated the upper chamber’s accomplishments together.
According to political appointee tracker Partnership for Public Service, Trump has picked 356 nominees to fill key roles in his administration so far.
Last week, the Senate confirmed Trump’s first judicial pick of his second term in a 46–42 party-line vote, approving Whitney Hermandorfer as a judge for the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
The Democratic-led Senate under former President Joe Biden confirmed 235 federal judges and the Republican-led Senate in Trump’s first term confirmed 234 federal judges.
Trump has fewer vacancies to fill in his second term. While the president during his first term inherited more than 100 vacancies from former President Barack Obama due to obstruction by a GOP-led Senate, Trump now has 49 vacancies to fill out of almost 900 federal judgeships.
It remains unclear whether Thune will move forward with Trump’s request to cancel the upcoming monthlong recess.
