FDA Announces Recall of Tainted Cheese Sold in Oregon

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert over the weekend about the voluntary recall of a popular cheese item due to bacterial contamination.

Listeria monocytogenes led the Face Rock Creamery of Bandon, Oregon, to recall Vampire Slayer Garlic Cheddar blocks, according to a Nov. 15 FDA alert.

“We initiate this recall due to the FDA environmental sample [that] identified the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the processing area where this cheese was packaged,” the FDA said. “Finished product has not been tested positive for any contaminants.”

The recall applies to 16 packages of six-ounce Vampire Slayer Garlic Cheddar units with a Nov. 4, 2026, expiration date stamped on them and UPC 8 512222 00547 8.

The blocks of cheese were sold between Nov. 10 and Nov. 13 exclusively at the Face Rock Creamery store on 2nd St. SE in Bandon, Oregon.

Company leaders did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication.

Listeria monocytogenes is a disease-causing bacterium that can be found in many places, including soil, water, sewage, rotting vegetation, and animals, according to the FDA website.

“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” the FDA said.

The FDA urged consumers who purchased the product to either destroy or return it to the retail location for a full refund.

Face Rock Creamery previously voluntarily recalled another one of its popular products five months ago called Vampire Slayer Garlic Cheddar Curds, which were sold at Trader Joe’s stores.

It was also Listeria monocytogenes that led to the summertime recall, according to a previous FDA alert.
Trader Joe’s announced the recall on its website on June 20 and urged consumers who had purchased the product not to consume it and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Affected stores were in Monterey, Fresno, and all locations North in California, as well as in Carson City, Reno, and Sparks in Nevada.

“This is the first product recall in Face Rock Creamery’s history, and it was initiated voluntarily out of an abundance of caution,” Face Rock Creamery president Gregory Drobot previously told NTD on June 23. “Routine quality testing identified the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes in two specific lots of our Vampire Slayer Garlic Cheddar Curds.”

The Vampire Slayer Garlic Cheddar Curds product was packaged in a clear, sealed plastic cup with a lid and had the UPC 8 51222 00528 7. Lot numbers were 20250519VS01 and 20250519VS02, and the expiration date was Aug. 29, 2025.
